Thanks for a great Winter Party!
Math
We completed Chapter 4: Multiplying Decimals by reviewing decimal by decimal models, using the multiplication algorithm with decimals, and knowing when to include decimals in the product. The class worked on the Chapter Review at the end of their books and played a game with it today. Students took their books home to review and/or practice additional problems over Winter Break. The Multiplying Decimals Assessment will be when we return.
If your child has not yet achieved 100% multiplication/division fact fluency, please have him/her continue to practice over break.
E/LA & Social Studies
Students enjoyed learning about how Molly Hays delivered water to men in battle and started firing her husband's cannon after he was injured in the book They Called Her Molly Pitcher. Vocabulary used in this story was present throughout the week as students learned about the Revolutionary War. Students, dressed as Patriots and members of the King's army, 'battled' using text evidence gathered from "A Song Heard 'Round the World" to determine what group could claim the song "Yankee Doodle."
In writing, students focused on editing this week as they put their final touches on their memoirs. We reviewed using commas after introductory words/phrases, as appositives, and after a direct address. Punctuating dialogue correctly was reviewed this week as well.
Please encourage your child to continue to use Lexia during Winter Break.

Defending Their Positions
Science
In Project Lead the Way (PLTW), students completed work on their chassis. Their next challenge was to design a way for their robots to quickly (under 2 minutes) remove blocks from an area, which contained obstacles. The group could use additional VEX kit pieces, but they weren't allowed to take any parts away. Each group designed very different collection methods.
