Message from the Principal

Snohomish School District published an excellent Community Newsletter on Thursday August 26th called School Health and Safety that goes over all of district safety rules about masks, social distancing etc...

In this Cougar Tracks, I am going to explain how Cathcart is applying those general district safety measures to keep our students and community safe and healthy.

First, our primary September goal is to have a fantastic, positive welcome back to school, AND assure that our students, teachers and staff all stay healthy.

We have kept most of the same safety procedures as last year so it is as easy as possible for students, parents and teachers. As the year goes on, we may adjust their procedures based on the health and safety of the students and the whole community.

By having a safe and healthy start, we can look to add Cathcart Parent Organization events, welcome parent volunteers back to school and get back to being a community school. That is what we are all aiming for. This is how we intend to move toward this goal:

Buses

We hope that most Cathcart students will be riding their buses. Our drivers will help students socially distance and will make sure that our buses are clean and disinfected. Students will wear face masks when riding on the bus and will continue wearing face masks when they walk to their classrooms. The principal and counselor will greet buses as they arrive each morning. Students will disembark from buses one bus at a time and we will help students socially distance as they walk to classes.

Parent Morning Drop Off

For anyone walking onto the Cathcart campus, we ask that you wear a face mask. You can walk your student to their classroom and we ask you to help us make sure that you and your students maintain at least 6” social distancing.

For parents who are dropping their student off in the West Parking lot, Ms. Melinda will start allow students to leave their cars safely at 8:24 am.

Classes Open in the Morning

Cathcart teachers will greet students at the door with smiles on their face and love in their heart at 8:25am. We aim to minimize line ups and so we ask parents to not drop their students off at school until 8:25 am. We will not excuse students from buses until 8:24am.

Attestations

There will be no online health attestations to complete this year, but it is very, very important to not send students to school who are feeling sick. This is the key to maintaining a safe, healthy school. We all want to do everything we can to make sure that we keep learning at Cathcart, in person this year.

Physical Education and Music

Cathcart will have PE and Music two times a week this year. We will also have library classes. PE will start outside and student masks will be optional. When PE moves inside later this year, students will wear face masks in the gym. Music students will be on the Gym Stage and will wear masks. Of course library will be in the library and students will wear masks.

Recesses

Face masks will be optional for students at recess. Cathcart has purchased lanyards for all students so they can easily take off their face masks and easily put them back on when they get into classes. We will work on having classroom procedures to help students keep track of their masks. PARENT WE RECOMMEND THAT YOU SEND 2-3 back up face masks with your student in case their face mask gets wet or uncomfortable. They have two or three recesses every day.

Lunches

We have scheduled four separate lunches to maintain physical distancing. There will be a hot and cold lunch option and students will sit in assigned seats. School lunches are free for student this year. If you choose to send a lunch to school then we ask that you send it in a bag so we don’t have to transfer lunch boxes to and from classrooms.

The End of the Day
Like last year, we hope that most students will take the bus home. AS EVERY YEAR, THE FIRST FEW WEEKS, BUSES TAKE MORE TIME TO GET HOME. PLEASE BE PATIENT AS BUS DRIVERS LEARN THEIR NEW ROUTES AND ADJUST TO FAMILIES WHO MIGHT NEED A LITTLE EXTRA TIME. Students will be excused to the buses before parent pick up students. We will excuse students to line up on the blacktop outside the gym at about 3:15pm Monday - Thursday and 1:15pm on Friday, as buses are leaving. Parents can walk onto campus with face masks on to pick up up your students like last year, or you can line up in the west parking lot to pick up your students like last year. PLEASE BE SURE TO CONNECT WITH A TEACHER OR SUPERVISOR BEFORE TAKING YOUR STUDENT TO ASSURE THAT ALL STUDENTS ARE ACCOUNTED FOR.

PS: we only expect to offer parent pickup in the West lot for the opening weeks of school.
