What is a School Advisory Committee?
What is a School/Parent Advisory Committee? The School Advisory Committee (SAC) Parent Advisory Council (PAC) is a school-based group intended to represent the school, the community, and those persons closest to the students. The group shares responsibility for guiding the school toward continuous improvement. The district school board is responsible, by Florida law, for establishing an advisory council for each school in the district and shall develop procedures for the election and appointment of advisory council members. For further information, please see: Section 1001.452(1)(a), Florida Statutes.
What is the role of the School/Parent Advisory Council? The School Advisory Committee (SAC) Parent Advisory Council (PAC) is responsible for final decision making at the school relating to the implementation of the provisions of the annual School Improvement Plan (SIP). The SAC/PAC assists in the annual preparation and evaluation of both the SIP and the school’s annual budget. For further information, please see: Section 1001.452(1)(a), Florida Statutes.
Who serves on the School/Parent Advisory Council? Beginning July 1, 2008, it is a requirement that the majority of the members of the School/Parent Advisory Council (SAC/PAC) are persons who are not employed by the school district. A SAC/PAC should be composed of the principal and an appropriately balanced number of teachers, education support employees, students, parents, and other business and community citizens who are representative of the ethnic, racial, and economic community served by the school. Certain members are elected by their peers, while business and community members are appointed, and the principal automatically serves. Only students in secondary schools serve on a SAC. For further information, please see: Section 1001.452(1)(a), Florida Statutes.

September Required Instruction
September (American Founders’ Month) is an important month for Civic Literacy instruction and one of the busiest for instructional statutes. Instructional statutes are required instruction in addition to standards aligned instruction for a particular course and grade level. In their classes, our teachers will support and elevate these important instructional topics and are excited to be relaunching a districtwide Freedom Week recognition. Below you will find a list of topics and themes that are required instruction this month.
- American Founders Month-September
- Heroes’ Day, September 11 – Beginning in the 2023-2024 school year, the bill requires middle school students enrolled in the civics education course and high school students enrolled in United States Government course, to receive at least 45 minutes of instruction on “9/11 Heroes’ Day” on topics involving the history and significance of September 11, 2001.
- Hispanic Heritage Month September 15th – October 15th
- Constitution Day-September 17th
- Freedom Week-September 25th – 29th

Grades 6-10 - FAST Progress Monitoring Test #1 Administration
Florida’s statewide, standardized assessments in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics have been aligned with the Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking (B.E.S.T.). The Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST), which includes VPK through grade 10 Reading and VPK through grade 8 Mathematics assessments, will be administered as a progress monitoring assessment, which students will participate in three times per year.
B.E.S.T. assessments that are not part of the FAST progress monitoring program include grades 4–10 Writing and end-of-course (EOC) assessments in Algebra 1 and Geometry.
Angeline Academy of Innovation will administer these required assessments September 12 - 23, during the school day.
Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) - Grades 8-10
The PSAT 8/9 assessment will help your child prepare for the future. It helps establish a baseline for students as they enter high school and begin preparing for college and career readiness. By taking the PSAT 8/9, your child will learn which skills he or she needs to work on for continued success when preparing for high school and ultimately college. In addition, the PSAT 8/9 will identify areas where your child excels (and may want to consider taking higher-level courses), as well as areas he or she should focus to improve academically.
It also provides students with better access to data and personalized study through the online College Board and Khan Academy, and offers a readiness baseline for the SAT. It allows online access to explore careers, majors, and schools which may align with your child’s personal interest, and provides planning tips and financial aid information.
Historically, students who take the PSAT score higher on the SAT, on average, than those who do not take the test. Please note that the PSAT 8/9 scores are not sent to colleges.
All 10th-grade students are invited to sit for the PSAT/NMSQT, the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which is an important assessment for college preparation.

Flu Shot Clinic

Health Screenings
Grade 6 Information
Health screenings are mandated for grade levels specified by Florida statute (381.0056, F.S., 64F-6.003, FAC) and the Florida Department of Health.
Mandated screenings for students in grade 6 are as follows:
- Hearing screening
- Vision screening
- Growth and Development screening
- Scoliosis screening
Before mandated grade-level screenings, a notification will be sent out to parents/guardians via school messenger, email, social media, written notification, etc. A Parent/guardian will need to provide consent located in the parent portal for their student to participate in health screenings.
The school health staff will notify the parent/guardian if their student fails the health screening via a letter, email, or phone call. Upon failing a health screening, it is recommended that your student is seen by the appropriate medical provider to determine if further assessment is warranted. Consult our registered school nurse if you have questions or concerns regarding your student’s screening results.
Important Transportation Information & Updates
LOLHS Bus Hub Changes Effective September 14th
Beginning on Thursday, September 14th bus traffic will be moved out of the traffic circle in front of Land O Lakes High School and moved to the small parking lot directly in front of the Culinary Arts Building. This new area is strictly for School Bus traffic only.
Parking is available in the North and South parking lot areas pictured below. For student safety, please do not park your vehicle in any area that is marked in red, especially in the traffic circle. We cannot emphasize enough the importance of following the traffic directives to avoid bus delays and traffic congestion.
Additionally, please be aware that the LOLHS hub is short one driver for route N-221, and our teams are working to identify ways to limit the resulting delays and disruption. One thing you can do to support our efforts is to emphasize to your student(s) the importance of complying with instructions from drivers, transportation department staff, and school staff. We make every effort to ensure that the buses run on time and with as many students as they can safely transport. We need our students to assist us in this endeavor.
Traffic Updates from Florida Department of Transportation - SR 52 Construction
Once Ridge Rd west of the Angeline School of Innovation opened, the traffic levels dropped significantly at the SR 52/Sunlake Blvd intersection. For this reason, the county ceased providing a traffic control officer at the intersection and decided not to deploy a temporary traffic signal.
FDOT’s contractor is working diligently to complete construction of the SR 52 widening project, including the opening of additional east/west travel lanes and activation of the streetlights. You can see the current project status and sign up for e-mail alerts here.
As an additional point of information, when FDOT opens additional lanes on SR 52 they will be installing a temporary restrictive median opening at the Sunlake Blvd intersection. This will limit northbound vehicles on Sunlake Blvd to right turn only onto SR 52 with an opportunity to make a U-turn east of the intersection. This restriction will remain in place until the developer of Angeline constructs a traffic signal at this intersection (estimated to be Fall 2024).
Confession: I Hate When People Criticize My Parenting
Let me start by saying I hate it when people criticize my parenting. Our 2-year-old had been screaming for five minutes, and we were out of distractions. There’s nothing worse than being stuck on a runway when your kids start freaking out. We had been entertaining him as best we could with games, toys, snacks, and movies. You name it, we tried it. But after two hours on a full plane sitting on the tarmac, he was done. As my wife took the diaper bag to the front lavatory to change our 3-month-old daughter, I was left to try to calm our son. For reasons I still can’t explain, I decided he needed a diaper change right then. I laid him down, pulled his legs up, and ripped the diaper off. I’m pretty sure everything he had eaten in the first two years of his life came out of that diaper and landed all over that seat. As I reached frantically into my bag for wipes, I came to a horrifying realization. My wife had taken them to the bathroom. That’s when my son went into a full tantrum.
Since I had to hold his legs still to keep the hazardous material from flying everywhere, I was stuck. Meanwhile, the stench began to hit row after row. I got glares from everyone. It seemed like two hours before my wife came back. When we finally got him cleaned up, he proceeded to scream louder than ever for 20 straight minutes. More looks and stern, silent judgment followed. As I said, it's hard for me when people criticize my parenting. I don't like being judged by anyone, particularly people without kids. Many times, I feel defensive. However, I’m definitely not perfect, and some outside opinions help point me in the right direction. I may end up disagreeing, but when I am open to outside opinions and when people criticize my parenting (even those without kids), I receive things that can sharpen me as a dad. Here are 3 of the greatest things I've learned from people who have criticized my parenting.
Huddle up with your kids and ask,
“How do you feel when people criticize you?”
