CDS - First Program
The Weekly Word from CDS FP, Nov 11-Nov 15, 2019
Hello First Program Community,
Students were happily back to a regular week of learning in their classrooms.
Thank you to the FP PTA; several members donated their time and effort to take down the many Halloween decorations and to then put up Winter decorations throughout the First Program building. The students and faculty really appreciate how great everything looks with the seasonal decorations.
Thursday was our Sweet Potato Harvest. Students from each grade participated in collaboratively harvesting vegetables from the garden. Some were the size of pumpkins, and students’ excitement and curiosity were also big as they shared in the important experience of how food goes from being seeds in the ground to food on our tables.
Please note that approximately two weeks from now is our Thanksgiving break; Friday the 29th is a non school day. Thursday, November 28th a half day of school. Lunch is not served on the half day and students will be dismissed at 11:30am. Buses will depart at 11:45am.
Educationally Yours,
Mr. Hill

In the Spotlight
This week we are featuring Kindergarten and P.E.
Kindergarten with Ms.Pabon
This week we got to harvest sweet potatoes in our school garden. Students were so happy from the beginning. It was amazing seeing them digging into the soil to find not only sweet potatoes but different kinds of living things like roly-polies (pill bugs), worms and others. It was great to see how excited they were to carry the pill bugs in their hands without hurting them. After picking and selecting the potatoes, we asked the cafeteria staff to boil some of them to prepare some delicious smashed sweet potato. Kids had so much fun peeling the potatoes, smashing them and adding milk, butter and cinnamon. Jiseop said, “this is delicious, we have to share”. Yummy!
P.E. with Mr. Tronsgard
This week in PE, the students were exploring long handled implements and the world of golf. Students got a chance to learn the basics of putting, chipping and driving. Each grade progressed on the skills they covered the previous year, as the Grade 4’s focussed on weight transfer, Grade 3’s focussed on contact, Grade 2’s focussed on swing and Grade 1’s focussed on grip. Some of the grades even finished off the week with an indoor game of golf. Special recognition goes to the Grade 4 class, as they were able to hit the target a record 6 times in their short practice time.
CDS FP Pride Day - Day 50
Book Fair
Last week’s CDS Fall Book Fair was a success! As usual, students visited the book fair with their homerooms to choose books that they’re interested in buying, and they wrote the titles down on a piece of paper to show mom and dad.
This year, we raised more than ever with a total of 9,796,000 KRW in sales! Using 10% of the sales, we were able to purchase 74 new books for the FP Library as well as books for the MS/HS Library. There are a variety of new books including picture books, chapter books, graphic novels, and nonfiction books for our students to enjoy!
Ultimate Frisbee
On November 9th, CDS hosted the first ever Ultimate Frisbee clinic for students in Grade 3-5. More than 50 students participated in this event from 3 different schools. Members of the Baekho Ultimate Frisbee team started the day with an exhibition game, to give the students a better idea of what the rules and game play were like. Then, the Baekho players, led by Mr. and Mrs. Drews, ran 4 different stations teaching the students about throwing, catching, defense and frisbee golf. After about an hour and a half of drills and lessons, the kids were ready to play. With 4 different divisions, we had 8 teams playing at once. It was a perfect day with surprisingly nice weather. All of the students improved so much over the course of the day. Hopefully they will continue to explore the fantastic game of Ultimate Frisbee.
Oktokki Space Center Field Trip
On Wednesday, November 6th, FP went to the Oktokki space center. We all had a great time as we learned more about planets, how astronauts live in space, tried some space-themed rides that helped us to understand how astronauts feel in space, and explored the outdoor playground. It was a great learning experience and fun time to spend with all our friends.
