Dear Families,
There is no doubt about it, being a parent is hard work. Most parents are typically prepared for, or at least familiar with, the challenges associated with the job of parenting the school age child. We expect there will be bedtime routines to argue, dinner negotiations, homework frustrations and days when they are just plain cranky. We know there will be scheduling nightmares to manage from birthday parties and soccer, to scouts, hockey and music lessons. And then, there are things that are much more complicated, and that we wish we didn't ever have to manage. Things like losing a grandparent, a family friend, or a beloved pet. Things like feeling safe at school, serious illness, divorce and war. These are the tough ones.
Teachers and counselors see first hand how challenging the tough ones can be for students at school, and we do our very best to support students while helping them keep their routines in place, as this can help kids experience comfort and safety. Please know we are here for you if your child is navigating something difficult and needs support at school. There are a host of online resources for parents for talking to kids about things like Divorce, War, Cancer, and Death. Our counselors can also point you in the right direction for local resources for whatever challenge your child might be facing.
So please, if there is a worry or challenge your child may be navigating that might impact their social, emotional or learning development, please don't hesitate to reach out. We can get through the tough ones-together.

This week’s term: Phonemic Awareness
Phonemic awareness is considered extremely important in the early stages of literacy, early childhood education and the development of literacy skills. Phonemic Awareness is sometimes confused with the term “Phonics”. Phonemic awareness is an understanding of the smallest unit of sound and how individual sounds are put together to form spoken words and phrases. Phonics involves sounds and letters. Phonemic Awareness is about identifying and producing the sounds that make up our spoken words and speech patterns. To assess Phonemic Awareness we ask students to identify the sounds they hear in given words. (“What is the first sound you hear in the word ’top’?”) This is different than asking for the letter. Once we pair the symbol of a letter with the sound, it becomes "phonics". For our kindergarteners and first graders, this is the first and most important step in learning to read.
