What was the Gold Rush?
The Gold Rush was in 1848, it was when people from California found gold deep in the soil. When the news got over to the east almost every one wanted to go to California to find gold and get rich. When the people came over to California there was not a lot of room. So the people forced the Native Americans off there land so that they could live there and find gold. Most often the people made the Native Americans work on there land.
The Experience
Before the European settlers arrived, there was about 300,000 Native Americans in California. Contact with new settlers brought problems to the area. It brought violence, disease, and loose of loved ones. By 1870 30,000 native people lived in California, most on reservations with out access to there homelands.
