Farley Elementary School's Weekly Family Update

THOUGHTS and THANK YOUS

Dear Farley Families,

This week's praise goes to three incredible third grade students in Mrs. Gaffney's class. About two months ago, Beatrix Johnson, Michelle Crisobal, and Emilly (with two Ls) Damascena came to visit me with an idea that they had to make afternoon announcements more inclusive. While we started having a teacher do afternoon announcements in English and Portuguese this year, these young scholars thought it would be helpful to include Spanish, too. They also volunteered to do the announcements since we didn't have any Spanish speaking staff free in the afternoon. Of course, we jumped at the chance to make this happen. We starting off with a tryout period of Fridays. It was such a success that now Beatrix, Michelle, and Emilly do the announcements in three language every single day! I am so proud that Farley's school culture empowers students to act and gives them a voice. We believe in our students’ potential and their very real capacity to share power with adults. Below is a picture of the students holding the phone that we use for announcements.

Have a great weekend! Stay cool!

CLASSROOM SPOTLIGHTS

MRS. CURTIN'S STUDENTS GROW A GARDEN OF GOODNESS

In grade 3, Mrs. Curtin's class has been researching the question, “What is so Amazing about Plants?”. In this unit, they started growing plants from seeds in February to give to staff in the building. As the plants have grown, students learned about the life cycle of plants, the parts of the plant, the needs of a plant, and necessary vocabulary to be able to read, write, and speak expertly about plants. The students will end their unit with an opinion writing piece comparing a plant grown hydroponically (without soil) vs. one grown in soil. Students are in the process of delivering plants to staff in the building. This has helped our ELL students to be better able to communicate these scientific concepts in both writing and speaking. Recently, Mrs. Curtin's students visited Mrs. Martin’s PK class to explain all they’ve learned. I, myself, chose basil as my plant. Laryssa Bandiera was the grade 3 student who grew me my plant. Because of her wonderful teaching and directions, I was able to successfully replant my basil when I got home!

STAFF SPOLIGHT

MS. CABRITA RUNS A HALF-MARATHON

In addition to being a fantastic Dual Language K teacher and busy mom, Ms. Susana Cabrita has been training to run a half-marathon. This week she shared with me some pictures and some incredible statistics from her race. She ran the 13.1 miles in 1 hour 53 minutes and 33 seconds. That is just incredible. Bravo Ms. Susana Cabrita! We are so proud of you.

If you have a third or fourth grader, see if they can figure out how long it took Ms. Cabrita to run each mile. Have them "explain their brains" when answering.

REMINDERS

A MESSAGE FROM SEPAC

SEPAC Hudson Making A Difference Award - There are many wonderful people that work for HPS that regularly assist our children receiving Special Education with their needs, and this past year has continued to have its challenges as we work through pandemic related concerns. We would like to award a few of those people with the SEPAC Hudson Making A Difference Award at the HPS District Awards night scheduled for 6pm on June 9th at Quinn Middle School. Last year, we had an overwhelming response from families nominating staff members for going above and beyond for our students. We hope to see that continue. All nominees will receive a certificate of recognition.

If you know of, or your child(ren) have mentioned a staff member that has stood out to them this year in helping them overcome obstacles or challenges please let us know a little bit about this person and how they have positively impacted your child. The employees selected do not need to be special education staff, but should stand out in helping students receiving Special Education. Nominations can be sent to SEPACHUDSON@GMAIL.COM no later than Wednesday May 20th. The nomination should include name, school and a brief explanation. Your child's information/experience will be kept anonymous. The winners will be selected by the SEPAC Hudson Board.

We look forward to hearing about all of the wonderful staff members who have made a difference for students!

VOLUNTEERS ARE WELCOME

Just a reminder that volunteers are welcome at Farley! Please contact your child's teacher to see how you can help out in the class.

ILT POSTCARDS

In an effort to continue to share the amazing ways our students are "Explaining Their Brains" (Farley's Instructional Focus this year), staff will be sending out postcards each month. Be on the lookout in the old-fashioned snail mail.

PAW PRINT STICKERS

Students get Paw Print Stickers for going above and beyond. When a staff member "catches" them doing something spectacular, they get two stickers-one to wear and one to put on their homeroom Fox poster. When their classroom Fox poster fills up with stickers, they get to have a classroom celebration. If you see a paw print on your child's clothing or backpack, please ask them why they got it.
