Westwood Families,
Weeks like these, I am especially grateful for our Westwood community and thankful for all the ways we work to show care and be present for each other. Thank you for your support of your student, their friends, other Westwood families, our staff and each other. We continue to have enhanced support for students available during the school day. Encourage your student to connect with one of our counselors as needed.
These rainy days and anticipated cooler temperatures seem to be suggesting that winter is starting to win. Students at Westwood have a daily recess and should come to school ready each day for outside recess unless the temperature is below zero or the windchill is below -10.
The end of the trimester is quickly approaching. Staff are working with students to be sure they are learning what they need to be ready for next trimester. This means students are:
- Staying on top of assignments and studying for tests to put forth their best learning.
- Asking questions and seeking help when they may not understand.
- Reviewing feedback in Schoology and adjusting based on the teacher feedback.
- Working with the staff on their learning plans.
- Engaging in words and actions that result in safe physical and emotional environment.
- Promoting a positive school culture and a sense of belonging for each student through words and actions.
- Creating a place they are proud to call their school.
- Being aware of and advocating for their social, emotional and learning words and needs.
- Adjusting their behavior to match the learning activity and environment and remaining open to feedback when they have difficulty.
Please help encourage and support your student with these end of trimester activities and ongoing school expectations.
With gratitude for your continued support of the Westwood community,
Tom Larson
Principal
Flu alert
Flu season is here. Along with the rest of Minnesota, Spring Lake Park Schools is experiencing an increase in flu and flu-like illness. Please help keep our community healthy. Continue to practice good hand hygiene and keep your student home when they are sick.
Advance notice: Expect notifications for negative meal account balances
With meals no longer free this school year, families whose student's meal account balance is negative $5 and below will begin receiving weekly notifications. Starting this evening, notifications will be sent by email and text message each Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
To find directions on how to add funds to your student's account, visit the nutrition services webpage. For any questions, please reach out to Jane Sweney at JSwene@district16.org or 763-600-5041.
Support during upcoming holidays
It's that time of year when a variety of different holidays are approaching. If you celebrate Thanksgiving or Christmas and need some extra support during this upcoming season, there may be programs within our district or local community where we can connect families. Please reach out to Noami Pitlick, the Social Worker & Community Resource Liaison at Westwood (763-600-5371) for more information.
Nervous System
7th grade scientists explored how their nervous system works by using different stimuli. Activities included pressure tests, response to audio stimuli, and response to visual stimuli.
