JBD FRIDAY FOCUS
May 24, 2019 "Embrace the Adventure!"
Happy Memorial Day!
All is going well here at school as we wind down the year. We are about half-way through the SOL testing and the kids are rocking it. Once again, thanks for all you do. Just a few reminders as we move toward the end of the school year:
Fifth grade parents: Please be mindful of the notes and communication being sent home from teachers regarding the end of the year events. Students MUST have permission slips to attend the skating party and the Beach Bash. There are no exceptions. Also, there is a change in the 5th grade graduation this year as we will be holding it at Great Neck Middle School! Specific directions will be coming home from the teachers. Keep an eye out for the team communication and ask your children about the details! It's all very exciting!!!
Parent drop off: Parents seem to be coming earlier and earlier. The drop of begins at 7:30. Please do not let your children out and then leave with out an adult outside waiting. In the past, student drop-off began at 7:50 and we moved it earlier to ease the traffic pile up. If your child is late, a parent MUST walk them into the building. Thank you for following the guidelines.
Bus Behavior: As we 'roll' into the end of the year, bus behaviors are getting challenging. Please remind your students that riding the bus is a privilege and students will be taken off of the bus for misbehavior, putting hands on others, and getting in and out of seats. Safety is our main concern and we appreciate your help.
Please enjoy this weekend as we remember our service men and women who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. I know many of you are worried about deployed family members and some who may be deploying soon. Please know, we are here to help you and your children with any of these challenges and transitions. Please reach out and let us know how we can support you.
Thanks for all you do to make John B. Dey a fabulous school.
Sincerely,
Beth Bianchi

CLINIC CORNER
Parents,
if your child has medication in the clinic ( Inhalers, Epi pens, Tylenol) I sent home through your child’s teacher a yellow letter about picking up medication before the last day of school.
The only thing that has changed is Epi pens that will not expire over the summer they can stay in the clinic. A new LAMP (Dr. Orders) are required at the beginning of the school year. The yellow letter will indicate if the Epi pen your child has in the clinic qualifies to stay in the clinic.
Any questions? Call 648-2447 .

- Remember to check the Lost & Found (in the Cafeteria). All items will be donated on June 14.
- Please check your child's Cafeteria Account and be sure it is up to date.
ALL VIRGINIA BEACH SCHOOLS AWARDED PEARL SCHOOL HONORS
For excellence in environmental education, 100% of sites in Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) have been named 2019 Pearl School Award recipients. This designation is awarded by Lynnhaven River NOW to recognize schools that foster excellence in environmental education, sustainability and stewardship.
"We applaud our schools, our community and Lynnhaven River NOW for supporting hands-on learning opportunities that show students that even at a young age, they can make a difference in the world," said VBCPS Superintendent Dr. Aaron Spence. "In addition, students are becoming problem solvers, value creators, collaborators, thinkers and inquirers. These are skills that will serve them well into the future."
Schools earn the designation by meeting minimum, yearly point requirements for participating in educational or service projects that teach environmental concepts. The division's schools have started or expanded gardens, participated in recycling programs, repurposed materials, studied flood levels and watersheds and built homes for vanishing pollinators, just to name a few projects. This school year, VBCPS also sponsored the first-ever "Our Watershed Needs Identified for Today and Tomorrow," or OWN-ITT competition, to challenge participants to explore the impact of their school site on the local watershed.
VBCPS has become a recognized leader in sustainability, teaching students about the interdependency of all systems in regards to social, economic and environmental impacts. The division's sustainability practices have also garnered state and national awards, including the 2019 Virginia Environmental Excellence Program Sustainability Partner distinction, the 2018 Governor's Award for Environmental Excellence, the 2017 Green School division honor and the ENERGY Star Partner of the year designation for two consecutive years. In 2020, VBCPS is launching an Environmental Studies program in partnership with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation's Brock Environmental Center. Recently, a VBCPS teacher was honored with the 2019 Presidential Innovation Award for Environmental Educators – the third educator in the division to earn this recognition.
