Roadrunner Review
May 2017 Principal Newsletter by Erika Krohn
Principal's Message
Happy May-another busy month! May kicks off SBAC State Testing for all of our 3rd-6th graders. While these tests are important to parents and our school, it is important to keep in mind that they are only small piece of who each student is and what they can accomplish. The state test will not measure kindness, trustworthiness, or what kind of friend a student is. I just ask that each student gives it their best effort. Our teachers have done an amazing job of preparing students well with rigorous instruction and lots of practice on the interim assessments. Parents can help give students an optimal shot at success by ensuring a good night's rest, a nutritious breakfast, and most importantly-some words of encouragement each morning of the test. Attendance and promptness are important as well. See below for a detailed SBAC schedule for each grade level. Let's do this Canyon Rim!
Sincerely,
Erika Krohn, Principal

Parent Technology Survey
Orange Unified School District is partnering with BrightBytes, an educational research and analytics company, in order to learn more about our students’ school and home technology use for learning.
We are reaching out to ask you to take part in our school questionnaire. Your participation helps us form a complete picture of technology use for learning. Please know that all of your responses will remain anonymous to protect your privacy and they will help your child's school choose the right technology for their classrooms. It will take approximately 10 minutes to complete. This can be done on your smartphone or a computer.
The last day to complete this questionnaire is May 30, 2017.

Looking Ahead to Next Year...
As the current school year draws to a close, some parents begin to wonder about next year’s class placement. At Canyon Rim, teachers at each grade level give careful consideration to the development of classes in which students will have maximum opportunities for success. This is a professional responsibility we take very seriously because these decisions are the precursors to the success of the entire school year to come. The classroom teachers are the best judges of your child’s “school personality” and performance. Placement decisions are made with great care to each student’s needs.
In order to ensure the highest quality of educational environment in each classroom, we use the following criteria when creating classes:
- Balance (as close as possible) in terms of boy/girl ratio
- Balance in terms of achievement levels, interests, and learning styles
- Clusters of students to maximize support for students with special needs (i.e. GATE, RSP, etc.)
- Consideration of student relationships
- Consideration of teacher and student personalities
Thank you in advance for relying upon the Canyon Rim staff to make the best determination for placement! While we do not take requests for specific teachers, if you have information about your child that you feel we do not know and that will help us with our placement decisions, feel free to write a short letter/email to me by June 1 explaining the insights about the academic environment in which your child will thrive. Please do not include teacher names. Any correspondence will serve as one piece of information in the complex puzzle, not a guarantee or promise.
One of the trickiest elements for parents about student placement comes from the conversations you may have with friends. Every class has a special personality that is dependent upon each unique students and the relationships that form among classmates and with the teacher. Thank you in advance for your trust in our excellent teachers along with their professional expertise to make sound decisions. We all have the same goal-excellence in education for Canyon Rim students.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Krohn
