QUOTE FOR THE PRINCIPAL'S JOURNEY
"The role of the teacher should be “to keep alive the sacred spark of wonder and to fan the flame that already glows… to protect the spirit of inquiry, to keep it from becoming blasé from overexcitement, wooden from routine, fossilized through dogmatic instruction, or dissipated by random exercise upon trivial things.”
John Dewey (1910)

Update From the Executive Director
MoASSP President Dr. Ed Gettemeier
I'm sure you will enjoy seeing and hearing from our Association President, Ed Gettemeier in the video above. Ed is doing a great job in his role as president for the 2018-2019 school year. Hearing from Phil again was extra special. Thanks to NASSP Executive Director for sharing her thoughts about the principalship and membership in our association. We are also fortunate to have a passionate voice at the national level with Lebanon HS Principal and Region 6 Board Member, Kevin Lowery representing us.
Sad News
We were all saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. John T. Glore this past week. John served as the second fulltime Executive Director of MoASSP from 1995-1998. I was able to speak with Dave Backer this past week who represented our Association by attending visitation in St. Louis. Dave served as the first fulltime MoASSP Program Director, serving fourteen years under John and Dr. Jim King. During my early years as an administrator, John reached out to me many times to help solidify my involvement with MoASSP. As we remember John, I have included a few items below as we recall a great principal and a pioneer in our Association.
Marshall Memo
I am excited to share with our MoASSP membership that all of you now have access to the Marshall Memo as a value add. You will find that this resource will save you time, broaden your learning, and help you keep up on the latest writings and research in education. It is a great resource to share bits and pieces with your staff. Enjoy!
The Legislative Bulletin
We will be on a conference call this morning with the Missouri School Administrator Coalition. Representatives from each of the administrator groups in Missouri will discuss education legislation. Take a few minutes to review the latest legislative bulletin sent out this past Friday.
2019 Powerful Learning Conference
Doug and I are attending the Powerful Learning Conference in Tan-Tar-A today and tomorrow. Sponsored by the Missouri Professional Learning Communities Project and the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, about 1,500 educators are in attendance. Doug and I enjoyed sharing our lunch table today with staff from Fulton High School. They presented on, "Succeeding at the Secondary Level." Principal, Chris Mincher and his team of four shared how their school evolved from a community of individuals to a community of collaborators. Congratulations to the following Missouri secondary schools being recognized for "Exemplary Professional Learning Opportunities today and tomorrow:
- Cameron HS
- Crocker HS
- Fulton MS
- Perryville HS
- David H. Hickman HS
- Russell Hawkins Jr. HS
- Warrensburg HS
Content Validation Focus Group
In partnership with the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and the Missouri Professors of Educational Administration (MPEA), MoASSP has been asked to conduct a content validation study on the new administrator performance assessment with a group of principals. Thanks in advance to those principals who have agreed to participate this coming Thursday in Columbia. They will be asked to provide feedback on how well each question measures the job duties of a principal.
AMBA Reminder
Take a few minutes to check out all of your membership benefits through AMBA. See details below. I was able to save about $40 recently on a rental car because of the discount code offered through AMBA. Check out the latest offers and deals.

MoASSP MOURNS THE LOSS OF DR. JOHN T. GLORE
Kim Marshall Welcomes MoASSP Members
Kim encourages you to clip and share articles with colleagues. The format will be delivered in both PDF and Word format. Please don't forward the entire Memo. "I hope the Memo is very helpful", comments Kim.
The Marshall Memo, published 50 times a year since 2003, is designed to keep principals, teachers, instructional coaches, superintendents, and other Pre-K-12 educators well-informed on current research and best practices. Kim Marshall, drawing on his decades as a teacher, principal, central office administrator, consultant, and writer, lightens the load of busy educators by serving as their "designated reader."
To produce the Marshall Memo, Kim subscribes to more than 60 carefully-chosen publications, and every Sunday reads through the material that arrived that week and selects 5-10 articles that have the greatest potential to improve teaching, leadership, and learning.

It is that simple. You do not have to send a message to your legislator to become an advocate. When we have an action item that needs support, we will be ready to act. Your principal voice is essential as we move into the 2019 legislative session. There isn't a better way for you to help educate legislators than to invite them to come to your school for a visit and shadow you. When you do, take a photo or two, and tag us @MoASSP.
