News from Dr. Holcomb
In the Fall we had 58% of our student's proficient on the Statewide FAST assessment. Our ultimate goal is to increase that by 10% on the Spring screening. Our teachers have been working hard to align their instruction to the needs of our students. The Winter screening window just closed and as a building we are at 70% of our students proficient on the FAST assessment. We know that we still have growth to make but we are so proud of our students for the growth that they are making. We know they are working hard! We appreciate your partnership in the work you are doing with them at home as well!
Through the leadership responsibilities of Focus, Opportunity, and Encouragement we have set goals for ourselves during our Monday Professional Learning Communities and Professional Development times. This week our teachers Sailed Around the building in teams of three to observe their colleagues during Literacy instruction. This was a great opportunity for them to gain new information as well as for us to spot check how we are doing with transferring our PD activities into the classroom. We continue to appreciate the time we have to get together and learn.

Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress (ISASP)
The time for our annual standardized assessments is quickly approaching. There are some changes this year as you can see from the new name. The Iowa Assessments are now called the Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress. The testing window for 3rd-5th grade students is open from April 29th-May 17th. 2nd grade will no longer take the assessments which is a change this year. Students in grades 3-11 will take tests in Reading, Language and Writing and Math. Students in grades 5, 8, and 10 will take an additional test in Science. Please do not plan to have your child miss school during our testing period. It is required that we assess all of our students.
Over the course of the next few months we will do our best to prepare the students for what they should expect on the new computer based tests. For example, not only will we work on skills like determining the important information in a passage or question, we will also be working on technology navigation skills. Students will be asked to answer multiple choice questions, open response questions, and will have to drag and drop answers into the correct location. Students will need to use the skills that we are teaching them to make the best use of their time to correctly answer the questions being asked.
District and School Climate Survey
Every voice matters in Sioux City Community Schools. That’s why we need to hear from all parents and guardians in our District and School Climate Survey, which is coming in February
Parents should check their email for an invitation and survey link and will be able to take the survey in English or Spanish.
The survey asks for feedback on student and academic support, safety and behavior, school leadership, and family involvement. We will use the results to better understand our needs, determine our strengths, and identify opportunities for improvement.
All survey responses are strictly confidential. The district has partnered with independent research and communications firm K12 Insight to administer the survey and compile the results. No one from the district will know who participates or how they respond. Watch for more details to come!
