Central Bucks High School South
Updates From CB South
National Merit Semifinalists
Central Bucks High School South is proud to announce that eight students have been named National Merit Semifinalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Congratulations to Kevin Chen, Kevin He, William Huang, Amy Liu, Alexander McMoil, Kevin Pan, Andrew Parker, and Daniel Strobel. According to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, “about 1.5 million juniors in more than 21,000 high schools entered the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2019 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screening of program entrants.” The scores of Semifinalists ranked them among the top one percent of juniors in the nation last year. These eight students will now compete to become National Merit Finalists where they will be eligible for scholarships through the National Merit Corporation or its sponsoring organizations. Finalists will be announced in the Spring 2021.

Attention Seniors!
SENIORS! It is College Application and Records Request Season!
Mrs. Barrett and Mrs. Ladley have posted 5 additional PowerPoint modules to the Guidance Website that cover specific information regarding the application process:
Fall 2020 #1 Introduction
Fall 2020 #2 Application and Deadlines
Fall 2020 #3 Student Responsibilities
Fall 2020 #4 Requesting Recommendations
Fall 2020 #5 Financial Aid
We expect all our college-bound seniors to listen and/or read the slides and notes on all five modules. Our hope is between the PowerPoint modules, FAQ’s (Word document on right), and College Application Quick Guide (Word document on right) that many of your application, transcript, and recommendation questions will be answered.
Students will be able to officially request transcripts and recommendations beginning September 14th. However, all steps in the modules and quick guide need to be followed in specific order prior to official requests. If procedures are not followed, transcript and recommendation requests will be cancelled.
Counselors will follow-up with the Class of 2021 the week of September 21st to see how the process is working and how we can help.
REMINDER: National Honor Society Applications Are Due By Friday, September 18th!
Take Care of Your Eyes
With increased screen time, our eyes may become tired and achy. The American Academy of Ophthalmology offers some tips for avoiding eye strain.
BLINK
While staring at a computer screen, we sometimes forget to blink. Blinking is needed to keep the surface of the eye moist. Post a note to remind yourself to blink.
TAKE BREAKS
20-20-20 Rule Every 20 minutes, shift your eyes to look at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
BRIGHTNESS
Adjust your screen brightness to match the level of light around you.
PROPER DISTANCE
You should be sitting about 25 inches from the screen. Position the screen so your eye gazes slightly downward.
CB South's Mock Trial Team
Do you want to meet new people, make yourself a better thinker, and develop speaking skills? If so, you should join Mock Trial! In Mock Trial! We take on the role of lawyers and witnesses that compete in competitions where we try a fictional court case. Even though we are a club that focuses on the law, you don’t have to want to be a lawyer when you are older to participate. This club is great for teaching you how to become a better speaker, think on your feet, and develop problem solving skills. If we’ve piqued your curiosity with this, you should join us at our informational meeting!
Info Meeting: September 14th and 15th at 6:30 PM on Microsoft teams (please email Leopold.R091@student.cbsd.org to attend)
Tryouts: September 22nd – 25th from 3:00-6:00 PM (in 15-minute slots)
To signup for a tryout use this link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60B0944AFA62DA7F49-mock

VIRTUAL FINANCIAL AID PRESENTATIONS
Borrowing for Higher Education: Presented by PHEAA
Register for a webinar link 9/15, 9/16, 9/22, 9/23, 9/29 and 10/1
Following up on the highly successful "Covering The Gap" webinar series, PHEAA now offers a series of one-hour webinars focused more specifically on the borrowing aspect of higher education finance. A significant percentage of students find that grants, scholarships, work-study, savings, PA529, and other funding sources are insufficient to meet the total cost of attending postsecondary school. In an ideal situation, borrowing would not be necessary; yet, considering the lifelong value of a higher education, borrowing can be a smart investment.
Linda Pacewicz and Dan Wray of PHEAA's PA Forward Private Student Loan Program will provide an in-depth look at federal and private education loans, to include calculating the amount to borrow, understanding loan terms and conditions, navigating the application process, keeping an eye on debt levels while attending college, and effectively managing debt after graduation. The discussion will also provide a glimpse into the world of credit decisions. Please register below to join us for one or more of these informative presentations. Active participation is encouraged via Q&A!
WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 28, 2020 AT 6:30 PM
Fran McKeown of PHEAA will also host a FAFSA WORKSHOP on Wednesday, October 28, 2020 at 6:30 PM. This workshop will assist families with general questions about completing the FAFSA. More info and *URL LINK* to follow!

PSATs
The PSAT is the practice test for the SAT. It is offered one time every fall and is the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship. We encourage all collegebound juniors to take the PSAT. The PSAT will be held at South on Saturday, October 17th. The PSAT has two sections- Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing. To learn more about the PSAT/NMSQT, please visit the CollegeBoard website.
To safely honor our District’s Health and Safety Plan and spacing requirements, the PSAT/NMSQT will be offered to JUNIORS ONLY this fall. The PSAT 10 will be offered to SOPHOMORES ONLY in the spring.
PSAT REGISTRATION begins at 8:00AM on Friday, September 11th through 11:59PM on Monday, October 5th through My Payments Plus (only).
The cost for the PSAT is $30 and registration must be completed through MyPaymentsPlus. Practice booklets will automatically be emailed to students once payment is received. Should you wish to pick up a printed copy, please contact the Junior House Office. Price adjustments are automatically accounted for in MPP for students who qualify for free or reduced price meals.
The PSAT is 2 hours and 45 minutes. The test begins at 8:00 AM but we ask all participating students to be here by 7:40 AM so the test can begin promptly at 8:00 AM.
Students should be prepared for the test by bringing a calculator and several #2 pencils. Extra batteries are also a good idea. Due to test security, cell phones should not be brought into the building on test day. The test should be completed by 11:30 AM but times may vary from room to room. Room assignments will be posted at South a few days before the test.
For sophomores, the PSAT 10 is not a required test, and sophomores who test are not eligible for any merit awards; however, the PSAT 10 does provide sophomores practice for the SATs that are typically taken in the second half of the junior year and into the senior year. Offering the PSAT 10 in the spring will provide sophomores with access to this practice opportunity, while also ensuring an additional 16 weeks of academic preparation leading up to the test. Additional details regarding the March PSAT 10 date will be communicated through our guidance department.
Senior Portraits
Did you have your senior portrait taken yet? The school photographer will be in the auditorium at South Monday – Thursday, Sept. 14th – 17th. This is the last opportunity to get your photo taken as it is the last time the photographer will be coming to the building. Please visit Lifetouch/Prestige’s photography website at www.ouryear.com to book your appointment time. Don’t forget to use our school code: 386. If you have any questions, please e-mail the yearbook advisor, Mrs. Fidler, at jfidler@cbsd.org.
Information From The Health Office
All students in 12th grade are required by the Pa Department of Health to have a second meningococcal vaccine. This year, the second vaccine will be due by 11/9/20. Please contact Mrs. Willingham lwillingham@cbsd.org or 267-893-3150 if you have questions.
All students in 11th grade are required to have a physical exam on-file per PA Department of Health. Please submit these forms to the nurse's office. If your student has a PIAA Sports Physical, she or he will not need an additional physical form.

CB South Athletics
Field Hockey
The CB South Field Hockey team is working hard to be ready for our first game on September 21st. Seniors captains Sophia Wasyliw and Alyssa Endrick have done an excellent job leading the team during the first week of preseason and tryouts. We are working hard to stay safe while maintaining social distancing, using sanitizing stations, and wearing masks when not playing. We would like to wish all CB South teams the best of luck this fall. GO TITANS!
Golf
The CB South golf team kicked off their season this week with multiple matches. They currently sit with a 2-1 record after wins against CB East and Souderton. The loss came against CB West. Standouts in those matches have been sophomores Noah Moelter and Emma Reilly.
The team will have several matches over the next two weeks in order to complete their conference schedule before individual tournaments begin late September.
Playing for Varsity are seniors Zachary Conklin, Will Locovare, and Matt Piotrowicz, juniors Joey Carlin, Aydan Horniak, and Nathan Pierzchala, along with sophomores Noah Moelter and Emma Reilly.
The Junior Varsity team consists of junior Cameron Mumford, sophomores Mikey Nemec, Billy Schanbacher, Braden Sullivan, and Alicia Szyszko, along with freshman Drew Soltys.
Girls' Tennis
The JV Girls' tennis team lost to a tough opponent CB East 5 to 2 on Tuesday, September 8th. The score was not indicative of the play as matches were extremely close. The team showed great sportsmanship and learned the importance of camaraderie in an unprecedented time in history. The team is excited for the rest of the season!
Cross Country
The Boys' and Girls' Cross Country teams are excited to be back training and preparing for their racing season. Athletes have been working hard throughout the summer to improve their fitness and happy to be back with their teammates for practices. They open their season at home on Wednesday, September 23rd!
