PAC Security Change
Google 2-STEP Verification
To PAC STAFF,
Due to ever-growing increases in computing power, information technology (IT) security breaches are now commonplace. The availability of sophisticated password-cracking tools means that even strong passwords can be compromised. Passwords are secure only as long as they remain secret and that, in turn, is based on their being transported and stored securely. Recent vulnerabilities in the Internet’s underlying encryption systems demonstrate the risk of depending solely on passwords.
Two-factor authentication is a security mechanism used to protect systems, services and accounts for which a password alone provides insufficient security. It is based on the principle of something you know (your username and password) and something you have (your cell phone or a hardware token). Users are first prompted to authenticate with their username and password; they are then prompted for a second authentication step using their mobile phone or other device.
Starting on (DATE????), PAC will begin to require the use of a two-factor authentication service for Staff, for systems and applications accessed through the Googles and Infinite Campus authentication services. Authentication will be required from wherever you connect, whether via direct connection to our internal network, or outside the network.
Why We are Moving to 2 Step Verification
It's easier than you think for someone to steal your password
Any of these common actions could put you at risk of having your password stolen:
- Using the same password on more than one site
- Downloading software from the Internet
- Clicking on links in email messages
2-Step Verification can help keep bad guys out, even if they have your password.
How it Works
Signing in to your account will work a little differently
- 1
You'll enter your password
Whenever you sign in to Google, you'll enter your password as usual.
- 2
You'll be asked for something else
Then, a code will be sent to your phone via text, voice call, or our mobile app.
