Why are Mr. Bond and Mrs. Strickland hanging out with Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak?
There's some exciting news on the horizon for our GMSD middle schoolers! We've taken a significant leap forward in STEM education by introducing the Woz Ed curriculum, thanks to Tennessee's Innovative School Model (ISM) Grant.
Spearheaded by none other than the tech legend Steve Wozniak, or "Woz" as he's called by peers, Woz Ed aims to propel learners into high-demand science and tech careers. By providing a cohesive pathway from Kindergarten to employment, Woz Ed holds a vision of not just fitting individuals for jobs but also igniting the spark of innovation.
Woz's journey is nothing short of inspiring. As the co-founder of Apple Computer alongside Steve Jobs, Wozniak's groundbreaking work in the '70s and '80s cemented his legacy as a key player in the personal computer revolution. And now, his vision continues with Woz Ed, helping students explore a tech-forward future.
As part of this innovative curriculum, our middle school admin teams were granted the unique opportunity to train directly with Steve Wozniak! And, following that up, the dedicated Woz Ed staff will be making their way to our campuses to impart knowledge to our teachers, ensuring a seamless transition into this new curriculum.
And, a special shoutout to Mr. Bond and Ms. Strickland! Our very own GMSD stars had an unforgettable time training with Wozniak last week.
Going Blue: Some special trees in GMSD to become a classroom canvas
If you're strolling around our campuses next week and spy some trees rocking a striking shade of blue, there's no need for a double-take. Here's the scoop:
Our schools are teaming up with the Germantown Public Art Commission for the Blue Trees project, a visual public art installation crafted by Australian artist Konstantin Dimopoulos. Using a biologically safe blue liquid chalk (not paint), the project shines a spotlight on global deforestation, reminding students of trees' indispensable role in our world.
Some of our talented students get to join forces with Dimopoulos and bring this vision to life right on our school grounds! So, if you notice some 'student-blue' trees dotting our landscape, now you know the creative minds behind it.
Concerned about the trees? Worry not. The blue hue comes from a water-based pigment that’s kind to our trees, critters, and environment. Over time, nature will do its thing, and the color will fade, leaving behind memories of an artful statement.

Going Wordy: RES Annual Halloween Vocabulary Parade
RES has a unique way of blending Halloween fun with academic flair, and this year was no exception. Their annual vocabulary parade has become a Riverdale tradition.
What is academic vocabulary, you're wondering? It's a list of words that our young scholars need to know inside and out for their end-of-year state assessments. These aren't just any words; they're pivotal terms that surface across various subjects. And parents, if you're itching to delve in, the state's Department of Education website is your go-to for that comprehensive list.
But why the parade, and why costumes? Pairing words with imaginative visuals (think costumes) is a clever way to cement them in our students' minds. There's a method to the madness: fun and distinctive associations create lasting memories. And honestly, when learning is this fun, it's a win-win!
In a nutshell, our Halloween at RES wasn't just about ghosts and goblins. It was about continuing a tradition of inspiring personal excellence with a sprinkle of festive fun.

Houston High School educators blaze trails at national conference bridging the gap between high school and beyond
Three of our very own educators from Houston High School - Brenda Kinney (12th Grade Counselor/Dual Enrollment Coordinator), Monica Thomas (Dual Enrollment Teacher for Personal Finance/Entrepreneurship), and Chad Uhiren (Dual Enrollment Teacher for Criminal Justice) - were recently in the limelight at the 2023 National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships (NACEP) National Conference.
The three are leading the establishment of the TnADEP (Tennessee Alliance of Dual Enrollment Partnerships). This chapter, with representatives spanning secondary, post-secondary, and various industries from across Tennessee, is united under the mission of propelling Dual Enrollment opportunities for our state's students.
They've also been handpicked for NACEP's National Leadership Academy, a distinguished program that gathers emerging leaders from around the nation. Over the next year, they'll be immersed in crafting and executing a NACEP-backed capstone project, with the grand finale slated for the 2024 NACEP National Conference.
On November 13th, the City will recognize its Teacher of the Month and Student Excellence Award Winners

Senior Captain, Natalie Page said of the team’s dedication, “Success is no accident. It's hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing." Houston's Boys Basketball helps out with Elementary PE classes
The Houston High School Boys' basketball team had some fun over the last week getting to visit PE classes at GMSD elementary schools. They taught basic basketball skills like passing, dribbling, and shooting. They of course incorporated an aspect of competition, which they also used to teach the future Mustangs how to be good sports, win or lose. To end each class, they would put on a dunk fest and half court shot show. However, at Farmington elementary, the high schoolers and elementary students alike were all impressed by Mr. Coleman as he made a half court shot with his back to the goal! It was a blast for all, and a time to bring the GMSD community together.

Pedal Power: Germantown Composite Mountain Bike Team Closes Strong Season and Champions Community Service
Germantown Composite Mountain Bike Team wrapped up a commendable season at the Tennessee Interscholastic Cycling League's state championship race in Chattanooga on October 23.
Leading the accolades, sophomore Izzy Fischer secured an impressive 5th place finish in her category for the season. Not far behind, Junior Matthew McDonald, competing in the Varsity category typically reserved for upperclassmen, placed 9th statewide.
This fall, students from Germantown schools showcased their prowess against school-sponsored mountain bike teams from across Tennessee. Representing Houston High School were:
12th Grade: Andrew Stevens, Luke Trautman
11th Grade: Matthew McDonald, Charles Allen Ortiz, Elijah Osters
10th Grade: Izzy Fisher, Thomas Humphrey, Alex Youngblood
9th Grade: Cole McKnight
From Houston Middle School:
8th Grade: Andrew Camamile, Christian Davis, Luke Holcomb, Lukas Weinmann
Riverdale's representation came from 8th-grader Jude Fischer.
In addition to racing, community service was a season highlight. Following a storm that wreaked havoc on the trails at Herb Parsons Lake in Collierville, Germantown's team, alongside teams from Collierville and Briarcrest, rolled up their sleeves. Together, they volunteered over 500 hours to restore the trails to their former glory.
As this season comes to a close, the Germantown team is already gearing up for 2024. New riders are encouraged to join. Pre-season activities commence in May and June, with the regular season beginning in July. Interested participants can reach out to John Humphrey, Head Coach, at gtownmtb@gmail.com.
