The bay leaf is grown in areas like Belgium, Russia, India, Italy, North America and France. Turkey is one of the biggest exporters of the bay leaf. The bay leaf grows on the Bay Laurel tree.
What part of the plant?
The bay leaf is the leaf off of the bay laurel tree. Fresh bay laurel leaves have very little flavor. The flavor's start to kick in after the leaves have been let to air dry for a couple of weeks.
Sweet or Savory???
They are on both sides of the spectrum. They are mostly used in making soups and stews, when they are cooked it bring out there amazing flavor.
Dried or Fresh???
They are better cooked or eaten dried because when they are freshly picked they lac in the flavor quality.

Health Benefits: In the Romen Times people used bay leaves to heal bee and wasp sting.
Fun Facts: Eating raw bay leaves is not good for you , but when eaten raw some bad side effects come along with it which makes some people think bay leaves are posinous but they are not.
