The Hiawatha Buzz!
April 9, 2021
Growing hearts and minds for a better today and tomorrow: every day, every way, every one.
Principal's Message
Dear families and caregivers,
We celebrated yet another 100 bees this week and took advantage of the glorious weather! We had multiple student requests for the celebration to be extra recess time.
This week during our whole school meeting our learning targets were:
I can think and talk about behavior choices in my life and stories.
I can notice when there is a problem in my life and in stories.
We discussed how our actions and words can have a positive or negative impact on others. We also talked about how we have a choice in how we decide to respond to a problem. There are pros and cons to our choices. Next week we will continue this discussion with a whole school book read.
I hope everyone enjoyed the sunshine this week and continues to do so! Tomorrow is going to be beautiful!
Take great care,
Katherine

Message from Ms. Weston
Greetings Hiawatha Families,
You can be very proud of your children. They have worked hard to understand that behavioral actions have consequences on others. We are now moving into SEL Standard 9. In this standard, we are learning some specifics of decision making. We are learning to consider pros and cons of decisions, and how different decisions may impact others. Below are the schoolwide learning targets for Standard 9.
I can think and talk about behavior choices in my life and stories.
I can notice when there is a problem in my life and in stories.
I can describe different choices about how to solve a problem.
I can describe the problem solving steps, with support as needed.
I can follow the problem solving steps to solve different problems, or ask for adult help when needed.
Our vocabulary for this standard are:
Problem - something that is hard to deal with or figure out an answer to, it might make you feel worried or stressed
Solve/Solution: to think of the best answer to a problem/what somebody did to get an answer to a problem
Pros and Cons: The good or helpful and bad or not helpful consequences to a decision.
To support this work at home, please continue to talk with your children about decisions and pros and cons of various decisions. Children learn so much from watching adults think out loud, so model your thinking when you are making a decision. Let your children know when you have a problem in your life. It supports their understanding that problems are universal when you let your’s be transparent. Can your children help you make decisions to solve problems?
Please be in touch if there’s anything you would like to discuss.
Take care! Alice Weston aweston@ewsd.org

Important Outcomes for Equity in the EWSD
Students, teachers, school leaders and community members are invited to participate in focus groups to help the EWSD continue to make progress towards becoming an equitable, anti-racist school district.
District leadership wants to be able to best tell the story of where we are succeeding and where we need to continue to change and grow. As we look to issue an annual equity report, we need community input to decide what information goes into the report, how best to present it, and how to make sure it is helping us reach our vision.
We hope you will join us for one of the upcoming focus groups on April 29, May 3 or May 11 from 5:30-7PM. (All groups will be held virtually via Zoom.) Click here to register.

Invite from Fleming School PTO to 3rd grade families
**ATTENTION HIAWATHA 3RD GRADE FAMILIES**
The Fleming PTO would like to invite you all to our Virtual April meeting. We will meet Wednesday April 14th at 5:30pm via Zoom (link below). This is a time where you can meet Matt Roy, Fleming Principal, as well as Summit Street families and our current board.
Given the current events our PTO meetings have been mostly a time where Mr. Roy can update us on what’s going on at school and what’s to come. We as a board decided last Fall not to do any fundraisers this year so we haven’t had much to discuss.
We will have board positions available in the Fall as two members will be moving on to ADL.
If you have any questions prior to the meeting, please do not hesitate to reach out to the board via email at flemingpto@ewsd.org. We look forward to seeing you all!
Thank you,
Liz Miller, President
Pat Murray, Vice President
Beth Knox, Treasurer
Mary Towle-Hilt, Secretary
