Principal's Message

Dear Families and Students,

For the second week in a row, I would like to thank all of our parents and students for following instructions during our dismissal and pick up procedures. This helps to maintain smooth traffic lanes. As we continue to assess and implement procedures on our Lynx Campus, we appreciate your continued participation and patience.

For those of you who missed the first two newsletters, please be advised that each week the Orlando Science Lynx Campus "Weekly Newsletter" will be sent home via email and may also be found on our Facebook and Twitter pages. Our weekly newsletters are a great resource to stay informed about school activities. If you have students at the Technology Drive High School Campus, there is a link to their weekly newsletter at the bottom of this page for your convenience.

This week, I would like to introduce you our School Counselor, Catherine Nesov. Ms. Katie received her bachelor’s degree in Psychology from University of Central Florida and her master’s degree from Rollins College in Mental Health Counseling. Her 5+ years in as a mental health counselor has allowed her to work with a diverse population including adolescents and adults performing individual, group, and family therapy. I truly believe that

Ms. Katie will make positive impact on our school, help parents and students. She will be focusing on the Academic and Personal/Social Development of our students. We are very excited to have her in the system. On behalf of Orlando Science Middle High School, I would like to welcome Ms. Katie to Orlando Science Schools! We are glad to have her in our Orca Family! Ms. Katie may be reached at Catherine.nesov@orlandoscience.org.

Science Fair Weekly

Big picture

Welcome future Nobel prize winners to the 9th annual OSS science fair!

Now that you have has the chance to know what your science class is all about it is time to work on your own independent research project. Science fair offers a great opportunity for educational expanse with creative growth. This year our school science fair will be held all day January 10th at the Lynx Campus Gym. As we have three building sources of middle schoolers, competition will be fierce to see which 18 projects make it to the Ying Expo regionals at the Central Florida Fairgrounds. Project ideas may have solidified while others are still being modified, either way, this week is a great time to jump on board science fair. If not already done so, please make sure your science fair idea is FINER (Feasible, Interesting, Novel, Ethical, and Relevant). Quantum mechanic projects might be a bit out of reach for some of us, while others may require sophisticated forms, labs, and professionals. Not to mention, your science fair project needs to be completed by the start of December! Still, dream big and always ask for help. If you are having trouble with science fair please consult your science teacher. If there are some confusions that still remain feel free to contact Mr. Stampas at stampas@orlandoscience.org. We will try to keep you updated every week to make your project is smooth and optimal as possible. Best of luck Orcas!”

What is the "30/30 Rule"?

The “30/30 Rule is the Delayed Dismissal Weather procedures that the nationally recognized. It is required that the “30/30 Rule” be enacted by the school if thunder is heard within 30 seconds of a lightning strike. Orlando Science Middle/High follows this rule.

When 30/30 Rule is implemented, Students will not be dismissed until 30 minutes has passed from the last sound of thunder. However, parents/guardians who wish to pick up their child/children during delayed dismissal, will be allowed to sign out their child/children at the front office.

In order to pick up your student(s) from the front office during this procedure parents/guardians must bring their dismissal sign to the front door of the school to sign their child/children out. If you do not have a dismissal sign, you will need to provide a picture ID and be on the school pick-up list to pick-up the child/children. Bus riders will be delivered home when conditions are all safe for dismissal.

An automated telephone and/or email message will be used to notify parents/guardians about delayed dismissals. Always be sure to update the school when your phone or email information changes. Thank you for your cooperation on our students’ safety.
