Weekend Focus

Sunday, September 27th, 2015

Dear FMS Staff,

I hope everyone has had a FABULOUS weekend and is looking forward to another great week at FMS! We will definitely be busy this week with a lot of exciting events. I truly can't wait to see our students show their ownership for learning at fall conferences. Please be sure that you are ready to go tomorrow to help them with their goal sheet. I've included the directions below and the other resources I shared this past week.

Focus for the week->reflect on the way you speak to your students. What does your tone, your body language, your word choice truly communicate? How does it help build a positive teacher-student relationship? How could it hinder? Take a moment to read one of the resources below and discuss during team plan this week:

Thank you so much for all you do to make our school an amazing place to learn for students and adults!

Fall Student-Led Conferences

Our Chromebooks are being damaged daily. Please remind each of your classes about the importance of proper care and safety. There are not unlimited fixes to these machines. If you see students carrying these without cases, please stop them and have them fix the problem. Thanks so much!

What's Happening this Week?

Staff Items

  • 6th grade is up for lesson plans this week. We will then continue the rotation.
  • PD plans were due Friday the 18th for certified staff. Please share these with me electronically if you haven't already.
  • Let's fill those boxes for the first staff challenge! See Jan's email for more information.
  • Lead team meets Monday at 3:35 in Shrout's room. Our focus this week is to solidify building goals to bring to the staff at our next PD day.

Improving Communication between School and Home

To improve the communication between school and families, each teacher (or you can do this by team) should provide a weekly email "newsletter" beginning this week. The purpose of this newsletter is to let our families know the things our students don't always share. (Learning targets for the week, important dates, test dates, due dates, expectations, etc.) If you would like to look at purchasing SMORE for your newsletters, it is on sale at the moment and could be reimbursed. SMORE also has a free version. A Google Doc is always another great option. We will work to find out families that do not have access to Internet and provide a print copy. Please also add Steve and I to your email group. If you are unsure how to set up an email group, first please check with your team members. Karen Snethen is also another great resource.

Thanks so much for your help in improving the communication between our school and families. See me with any questions.

WIN Updates

Thank you for a very successful start to our WIN-What I Need time. Here is some guidance on "what to do when" questions.

1. Please remind students that this intervention is made especially for them. We truly are trying to meet the individual needs of all 521 FMS students. If a student isn't doing a genius hour project yet, it is ok and please be sure that they know this.

2. Please discuss in team/dept this week shifts needed for our next WIN rotation, which will begin on Wednesday, October 7th.
