Newsletter for June 12th
Hello from the Yelle.
Well, here we are at the end of the school year. Only 1 more day left -- Monday, June 15, Chromebook Return and Locker/Desk Clean-out Day (more specific information below on this event).
WE LOVE YOU, WE MISS YOU and WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU are certainly the themes to these past few months of Remote Learning.
This has been an experience none of us expected but we are all so impressed with how our students have performed.
We have to thank you, our families, for supporting our students with their "home learning." Thank you for all you have done.
We have to thank our faculty and staff for all the work they put in to making the "remote learning" something that everyone could handle and still build our students' skills so they are prepared for the next year. Thank you for all you have done.
And, I cannot thank our students enough for showing unbelievable maturity and grace in the face of this global crisis. Thank you for all you have done. You have been truly amazing all year long.
Even with all of this that has gone on; it has been an absolutely fabulous school year. I cannot believe it is almost over!
Please see below information for Monday's Chromebook Return and Locker/Desk Clean-out.
I have also attached the 5th Grade Celebration Video, which is awesome, and our 5th Grade Celebration Zoom Meeting recording.

Monday, June 15th -- Chromebook /Library Book Return and Desk/Locker Clean-out/Medication Pick-Up
Dear Yelle Families:
I hope you are safe and doing well.
On Monday, June 15th, the last day of school for the 2019-2020 school year, we will be hosting our Chromebook/Library Book Return and Desk/Locker Cleanout for all students.
We are attempting to limit the number of people in the building as well as keep it as safe as we can for all.
First, students will come during the assigned times below according to the first letter of their last name. Students have to be wearing a face covering/mask in order to enter the building. Nobody is allowed in the building without a mask. We will limit the number of students in a classroom at a time.
4th Grade students will enter the Main Entrance to the Main Office doors. 5th Grade students will enter the entrance by the Gym.
The Technology Department will be taking students’ Chromebook (and chord) or other District technology as they enter the building. We will also have tables set-up for any Library books and any other school-owned materials that might have been at home during the closure.
We will have lines marked outside for students to stand behind to keep 6 feet distance between them, in case it is busy to limit the number of students to one per classroom.
Once a student comes into the building, drops their technology and other school materials, they will be allowed to go to their locker and classroom.
Students should come in with bags to collect their materials. Please keep in mind, students may have accumulated more than one bag’s worth over the course of the year.
Parents should remain in the car waiting for your child. Please drive carefully in the parking lot as students will be entering and exiting with materials in their arms.
If parents have yet to pick-up medications, epipens, or other items from the Nurse’s Office, please call Nurse Jenny when you are in the parking lot to have her bring them out to you. Her number is 508-285-0197.
Please remind your child, as we will as well, that even though we all have missed them terribly, this occasion is for dropping off materials and pick-up; it is not a social event. We will try to limit the amount of time students are in the building. Everyone must respect social-distancing guidelines, which we know will be difficult, to keep everyone safe.
A reminder that everyone entering the building must wear a mask or facial covering during the pick up process.
Yelle 4th & 5th Grade Chromebook Drop-Off & Locker/Desk Cleanout Schedule

THINKING ABOUT 2020-2021
To Next Year's Yelle Families:
We are starting to think about scheduling for next school year.
Please let Mr. Geoghegan know if there is information you want him to know about as we look at groupings for next year's 4th and 5th Grade classes.
I cannot always promise everything but we most certainly try our best at finding the best fit and situation for all students.
Any questions, please let Mr. Geoghegan know.
Thank you,
Mr. G

Reading and Math and Library Resource Padlet
Please check out the virtual book fair
Dear Families,
This Summer the Norton Elementary School Teachers, Administrators and Staff would love for you and your children to read about fables, fairy tales, myths, and legends. They may also choose to explore non-fiction, poetry, biographies, and more.
The Summer Reading Slide and Math Slide is real. This year it will be especially important to practice reading and math everyday to maintain your reading and math skills.
“Many children, especially struggling readers, forget 2-3 months of what they've learned or slip- out of practice during the summer months. Research has shown that when kids put down the books for summer, often their reading ability drops with it. The term “slide” refers to children dropping in their reading ability following a lack of reading over the summer break. Without reading practice, these losses add up each year.” “On average students lose approximately 2.6 months of learning in math over the summer. The research is clear: summer learning loss is a significant problem, playing a surprisingly large role in creating the achievement gap.”
Here are some guidelines below:
● Your child may read any book(s) of his/her choice. You can find books online from the resources provided.
● Please practice math skills using the suggested math calendar activities, games, and digital resources of YOUR Choice!
● TRACK it on your reading and math logs provided.
● RETURN both the reading and math logs to your new teacher in September for a prize!
● Have Fun! Play Reading Bingo!
● Choose one of the books you’ve read to write about on the response sheet provided in resources.
● Read for at least 20 minutes a day and try to do 3-4 math activities a week! You can do it! Go For It!
● You will receive a ticket for each item returned to be entered into a drawing for a chance(s) to win a grand prize. Ex. If you return the reading log, math log, reading response sheet, and your bingo board you would get 4 tickets for 4 chances to win.
*We have partnered with the Norton Public Library to provide multiple avenues to access books and be sure to register for the NPL summer program. Please check out all the options in the Resources.
From the Desk of Nurse Jenny
Dear Yelle Families,
It’s that time of year again for 5th Grade.
So this Nurse Jenny News is for 5th Grade Families.
Fifth grade can be a time for various physical changes as students approach adolescence. To help students understand the physiological changes taking place during the process of growing up, an educational lesson is presented as part of the fifth grade curriculum. This lesson is usually presented at the end of May to 5th graders every year. The presentation is factual and stresses the naturalness of the changes that occur during puberty. The importance of personal hygiene, good nutrition, and the balance between exercise and rest is also stressed.
Due to Covid-19, schools teaching puberty/growth and development this spring will need to be taught virtually. Therefore, I have attached the links to view the videos that I use to teach growth and development to 5th grade students.
You can access the videos at the links provided below:
The girl version:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OR1XJZ0xRSo&list=PLRyQfUYbMgkcDFrBl_HVmTuLS_ut-MykU&index=2
The boy version:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G57Suq7JpQE&list=PLRyQfUYbMgkcDFrBl_HVmTuLS_ut-MykU&index=3
The 5th grade boys and 5th grade girls have always been separated when the movie and lesson is presented in school. The guidance counselor and myself teach the girls’ version and the Dean of Students and Principal teach the boys’ version. Afterwards, questions are encouraged and answered. In the past, most questions have been anonymously written on pieces of paper by the students and answered by the instructor, which helps ease students’ anxiety.
This year, if any students have questions or concerns please feel free to contact me via email. I am more than happy to help.
Thank you! Stay safe and healthy!!
And just like that, it feels like Summer with the warm temperatures, open pools and long sunny days! Perfect timing to give some thought to the basics and importance of sun safety now that we’re all experts on hand-washing and social distancing in the time of COVID-19. We’re all so busy these days, which makes it tempting to skimp on protection from the sun. However, once you get into the habit of using sun protection, the benefits will lead towards a lifetime of safe enjoyment of the outdoors.
Check out these links below for guidelines regarding your pets’ protection from the harmful effects of too much sun as well:

Our Awesome Yelle Teacher Appreciation Video
Happy Teacher Appreciation Week!
Please see the attached video from our students to our teachers and staff. It is really sweet and wonderful. Sometimes the volume is too low and sometimes it is too high, but the message is certainly clear that our kids appreciate everything our teachers do for them.
It is awesome to see their faces but even more than that the sentiment is clearly there that they comprehend, beyond their years, how amazing our staff all are.
Enjoy; thank you Yelle Faculty and Staff for all you do.

A Message from Your Norton Public Library
I hope you and your loved ones are safe and well. The past few weeks have been extremely difficult for all of us, in so many ways. The COVID-19 outbreak has hit us all hard, and this is a scary time for everyone. We were very sad to have to temporarily close the library building. We miss seeing our colleagues, patrons and visitors so much, but we want to reassure you that despite everything, we have been hard at work to help you during these emotionally and financially challenging times. Our network has extended due dates and no fines will accrue while the library is closed. Expired and blocked cards will be able to use our online offerings while we are closed. Please see our FAQ for information about checkouts, returns, holds, library cards and access. Since we are under a stay-at-home advisory and are all socially distancing, the library has added virtual programming such as virtual meditation and exercise classes (dance fitness, tai chi and more by zoom with Kelley!), virtual book groups, and virtual story times. We continue to offer free wifi in the library park and parking lot (please remember to practice social distancing). We have increased our 24/7 services from e-books and downloadable and streaming audiobooks, music, television and movies, resource databases, online learning resources and more. The SAILS network is purchasing more Overdrive e-books and audiobooks to keep up with the demand. We now allow 7 Hoopla credits per month, and 1,000+ "bonus borrows" that don't use credits. Creativebug offers over 1,000 video classes taught by top designers and artists. Ancestry Library can temporarily be accessed from home, with tutorials, video courses and 500 million records and images to search so you can explore your own family history (please email nortonlibrary@sailsinc.org for access. For those of you who may not visit our website or follow us on social media, our online presence continues the vital work of public libraries at a time when we need them most. We have scaled up our online presence and updated our website to highlight trusted and timely information. We have curated multiple lists of resources: Our library building is closed, but the library will always be a place for lifelong learning and the hub of the community Please do not hesitate to reach out to us at any time by email or using the form on our website. We are here for you and look forward to seeing you again soon. Stay safe and healthy! Lee Parker Library Director Our staff are working hard to find new ways to connect and we would love to hear from you! Fill out this brief form to ask questions, get reading recommendations, suggestions for online resources, suggest a service, or just say "Hi!". Below you'll find links to learning resources for all ages, experiences from all over the world that you can view from home, online resources for education and enrichment, sign up for an online library card, information for those who are feeling anxious or overwhelmed, and more.
