Weekly Message from the Founder of ALL THINGS EQ (Danna Evans):
Our motto in school this week is:
I am someone people can count on.
This week's goal is for students to understand that being someone people can count on means you act with integrity. Integrity is choosing your thoughts and actions based on values rather than personal gain. In school, we explain that having integrity means doing the right thing, even when no one is watching. There are many times when children act with integrity. Such as:
- Not passing on unkind gossip about other people.
- Following through on promises made to others.
- Returning found items because it's the right thing to do and not expecting a reward.
- Admitting when you made a mistake.
When you see your child act with integrity, point it out to them and let them know you are proud of their decision to act with integrity. When kids do the right thing because they know they are someone who acts with integrity, it is very affirming, and it helps them shape their own beliefs about themselves and guides them in future decision-making.
Developing integrity in our children isn't a one-time lesson because integrity is a choice we make repeatedly. What's nice is that when we praise our children for acting with integrity, they will have that image of themselves and work to maintain it.
