Emmanuel Catholic College
College Newsletter - Term Two Week 3 - 17 May 2019
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents, Students and College Community,
Our Year 12 students commence their Semester examinations next week. This is normally an anxious time for our students but good preparation and hard work normally assists in minimising nerves and stress associated with examinations. Some useful tips for students before and during examinations can be found on these links. Our Year 11 students and then our Year 10 students will follow with their exams in the coming weeks. I wish all our students sitting exams well.
This week we held our Whole School Assembly. It was a great celebration of all facets of College Life. At the Assembly our Cross Country Team was acknowledged and Blake Lawton and Kirstie Crommelin were announced as the 2019 Captains of the Cross Country Team. Our Cross Country Team have always performed well in the past and our boys have been runner-ups in the past two years amongst nearly sixty schools in the Competition. I know that the Team have been training hard and I wish them well for the event on Thursday 30 May.
On Wednesday this week we held our Term 2 College Tour. Once again over two hundred people were in attendance to see our College. Currently, I am interviewing for students entering Year 7 in 2021 and will conclude the process in the last week of this Term. It is very pleasing that we have an abundance of Applications. Parents who have siblings starting in 2021 must have their completed Application Forms returned to the College within the next two weeks. As mentioned last week, Scholarship Exams for students starting Year 7 in 2020 and 2021 is scheduled for the afternoon of Tuesday May 28. Parents who would like their child to sit the exams must complete the electronic Application Form on the College website which can be found here.
On Tuesday evening, the College Board confirmed that the College will undergo a process to produce a Strategic Plan for 2020-2023. The Board will make an appointment within the next week of who will lead and facilitate the community through this important process. Staff, parents, students and the wider community will all be consulted as the Plan is constructed. The aim is to have the Strategic Plan ready in November this year.
God Bless,
Mr Leo Di Gregorio - Principal

AUTHOR MATT OTTLEY VISITS EMMANUEL
As part of our Year 10 Pathway one English program we are studying Matt Ottley’s multimodal text Requiem for a Beast. We were lucky enough to have a visit from the famous Australian author, musician and artist. This was a very special learning experience for everyone. He shared with us the long journey he went through both personally and professionally to get the text published. He also shared his ideas about the themes covered in the text such as the Stolen Generations, the expression of masculinity in Australian culture and the effect of trying to fit in to a society where you are seen as different.
The students were wonderfully welcoming and participated brilliantly throughout the visit. He was very impressed with their level of interest and engagement. Thanks Year 10 Pathway One and thanks to Matt Ottley a very talented author, musician and artist.

ECC ATHLETICS CARNIVAL 2019
On Friday Week 2, the Emmanuel College Community was blessed with a sunny 26 degree day and plenty of sunshine for our Annual Athletics Carnival. In what is a big day full of novelty games, track races, field throwing and jumping events there is plenty of action. All students demonstrated terrific sportsmanship, enthusiasm and striving for excellence in every event they were involved in.
Students moved around the ovals competing in long jump, shot put, 800m and two Tassie Devil novelty events. After the morning events, students were able to show their talents in the track events, including 100m, 200m and 400m sprints. The House tents were an array of colour as the six Houses sat alongside the 100m straight cheering on their fellow House peers.
Frassati House cleaned up the awards taking out both the Tassie Devil Award for the novelty events and the overall Championship Shield. Congratulations to all of the Frassati students and staff.
Along with the Champion House shield, points are also allocated to individuals; these points go towards the individual champion, runner-up and third place trophies. Below is a list of the individual trophy winners:
A special thanks to all Teaching and Non-Teaching staff who helped out on the day in order for the event to run so smoothly. A special mention to the PE staff for their hard work in the lead up to the event. Also to our fantastic Hospitality staff and students who supplied all spectators with delicious coffees and snacks throughout the day.
The Athletics Carnival is a whole school effort and a fantastic day for the College community to get together, thank you to all the parents that came down and supported the event. I hope your day was relaxing and entertaining.
Again, well done to all students for creating such a positive and enjoyable Carnival for everyone.
Mr Jarrod Parry - Head of Sport

YEAR 11 MODERN HISTORY EXCURSION
On Wednesday 8 May, the Year 11 General History students visited Fremantle to tour the Western Australian Army Museum and to partake in a World War Two history tour conducted by Two Feet and a Heartbeat.
The class has been learning about the impacts of World War Two on Australia, focusing on Fremantle and had the chance to find out more. At the Western Australian Army Museum we were able to learn about Fremantle's history in relation to World War Two and view medals, personal accounts of soldiers and gain an insight into life in Perth during the 1940’s.
After leaving the museum we all had a relaxing lunch on the waterfront before we went on a two hour walking tour of the historical sites and memorials around Fremantle. The most memorable being the John Curtin Statue and the Migrant Wall on the main Wharf.
The day was enjoyable and seeing History come alive made our lessons all the more worthwhile.
Bailey Roberts - Year 11 Student

FOOTBALL CORNER
Week Two was a tough one for our football sides as we unfortunately lost all our games.
On Monday, one of our Junior Boys sides were out bodied by a physically bigger team in Court Grammar and lost by a big margin, Tuesday saw the Senior Girls put up a masterful effort to unfortunately go down by 2 goals to Court Grammar and on Wednesday, our Senior Boys weren’t able to hold off a rampant Mandurah Catholic College and lost by 2 points. Our other Junior Boys side play Thursday afternoon against Clontarf so hopefully there may be some good news at the end of this week in our football world.
Reports of the games are below and the coaching staff are already looking at next week’s fixtures to return to the winning circle.
Next week’s fixtures are:
Monday – Junior Boys v Corpus Christi (away)
Monday – Senior Girls v Kelmscott (away)
Wednesday – First XVIII v Comet Bay (at Anning Park)
Thursday – Junior Boys v Mandurah Catholic (away)
In other football news, we wish Brandon Walker good luck after being selected for the State 18’s side to play West Perth on Friday night. He is currently training with the Football Academy squad and being a part the State 18’s side, as a 17-year-old, is a massive achievement. Well done Brandon!
Mr Steve Pendleton

Senior Girls
The Senior Girls Football competition got under way this week. Our girls headed out to Court College (originally named Serpentine Jarrahdale Grammar College) in Mundijong. Unfortunately, we couldn’t field our full team due to injury and illness and only managed the minimum numbers of players.
Nonetheless, the girls battled all game and were in front for 90% of it, only falling behind in the final minutes, losing by one goal. It was a consistent effort from all the girls as they fought hard throughout the game.
They should all be very proud of how they represented the College and we look forward to next week’s game where we are taking on Kelmscott Senior High School.
Mr Ryan Henley

First XVIII
We headed out to Mandurah Catholic College (MCC) to take on an opposition that were convincingly beaten in their first-round game against Comet Bay. After chatting to their coach before the game, we were informed that many of their starting team were missing for that game. Our confidence was sky high going into this game after convincingly beating Clontarf in Round One.
Talking to our boys before the game, I highlighted MCC are always a tough proposition at their home ground as they play a tough, uncompromising style of football on their small ground. We also like to play a similar style of football so it promised to be a good game. And it was!!!!
After the first half we were up by 2 goals with our defence playing a superb game and midfielders providing many opportunities for our forwards to hit the scoreboard. After the first 5 minutes of the second half, our lead increased to 28 points and it seemed the game was over. However, to MCC’s credit, they never gave up and kicked the last 5 goals to win by 2 points.
Even though we lost, there were many positives to take out of the game that can be used to propel our campaign deep into the Term Two Finals. Angus Fraser, Alex Basto and Harry Gibb led the midfield superbly with gut running and courageous attacks on the ball. In Defence, Ashwin Malik and Tarrant Clissold were really impressive with their tackling pressure and composure on the ball.
Our boys are smarting after the loss and are looking forward to taking it out on Comet Bay next week. Well done to all teams this week.
Mr Steve Pendleton - Football Academy Coordinator

FROM THE FINANCE DESK
Term 2 school fees are now due. It would be appreciated if you could take the time to ensure your account is up to date and arrange payment as soon as possible.
A large number of families set up their payment arrangements based on the fees and charges set at the commencement of the year however, fail to include the Health Care Card discount and additional charges or declined payments that have occurred during the year. It is imperative that all families check their school fee account and make any necessary adjustments to the payment schedule.
An alternative is to pay any additional charges/declined payments and retain the current repayment schedule. It is distressing for families to get to the end of the year and find that the school fee account is in arrears – it is not the responsibility of the College to manage your school fee account.
Please contact Rachel or Maria on 9414 4050 should you have any queries regarding your account.
We thank you for your continued support and co-operation.
