WM 3rd Grade Curriculum Update

Reading and Writing
Reading
Third Graders have just begun their unit of Non-Fiction Research. Within this unit, students will research animals and practice skills such as synthesis, growing ideas, questioning and compare/contrast. They will also practice note-taking as researchers. They will become experts on these topics and push their thinking deeper!
Writing
We are beginning a new informational writing unit. Third graders will use their knowledge of researching animals in reading to publish a non-fiction informational text. Along with reading, they will push their thinking on topics to grow ideas so that they can teach others!

Introducing Area
In this unit, your child will solve multiplication and division problems, calculate the area of rectangles, and use rectangular arrays to model and solve multiplication and division problems.
Science
3rd Graders rotate through these FOSS Science kits throughout the year:
Energy and Matter: Students learn about the transfer of energy from one form to another.
Sound: Students learn how sound is generated, how it is made louder and softer, higher and lower.
Water: Students learn the properties, changes, and interactions of water.
Social Studies
We are learning about the different branches and levels of government, basic rights of citizens and the voting process.
LMC - Library
Third graders are expanding their reading horizons, looking at new genres and story structures. We’re celebrating and exploring favorite authors and characters, and we’re discovering new favorites as well.
Music
Mrs. Spahn’s classes will be working on: World music and instruments, including African Drumming
Ms. Soltis’ classes will be working on: Mini ukulele unit! Students will learn 2 chords, C & F, while also studying time signature and measures.
Technology
Students will be learning about internet safety. They will research and discuss various aspects about online safety. Students will continue to strengthen their typing speed and words per minute.
Art
PE
We just finished up with our basketball unit and students enjoyed participating in our Hoops for Heart event days, that took place on Feb. 28 and March 1. Thank you to all who helped fundraise for this event and for supporting The American Heart Association! All donations must be made online or turned into Mrs. Johnson by Fri. March 15, thank you!
The month of March is filled with some awesome units. We will be training for the Ninja Warrior! Students will explore different fitness activities through fitness stations and games. By the end of the month, they will be ready to compete in our WM Ninja Warrior course.
