iRead During the Summer
At Mauldin High School, we want to emphasize that it is especially important for students to read over the summer months! Check out our iRead Summer Reading Program music video to learn more about our program!
A report written for the US Department of Education examines independent reading. Researchers found that the amount of reading done outside of school was consistently related to gains in student achievement. from: Becoming a Nation of Readers: The Report of the Commission on Reading,
According to the children’s literacy organization Reading is Fundamental (RIF), experts have found that “students who read during the summer gain reading skills, while those who do not often slide backward.”
Along with improving reading skills, students who participate in our iRead Summer Reading program may earn extra credit in their English class. They also will be eligible for prize drawings that include iTunes gift cards, popular restaurant cards, coupons for merchandise at clothing and gaming stores, etc. The more books you read, the more chances to win prizes!

Croak by Gina Damico
From the novel:
Fed up with her wild behavior, sixteen-year-old Lex’s parents ship her off to upstate New York to live with her Uncle Mort for the summer, hoping that a few months of dirty farm work will whip her back into shape. But Uncle Mort’s true occupation is much dirtier than shoveling manure. He’s a Grim Reaper. And he’s going to teach Lex the family business.
She quickly assimilates into the peculiar world of Croak, a town populated by reapers who deliver souls from this life to the next. But Lex can’t stop her desire for justice—or is it vengeance?—whenever she encounters a murder victim, craving to stop the attackers before they can strike again.
Will she ditch Croak and go rogue with her reaper skills?
If You Find Me by Emily Murdoch
From the novel:
There are some things you can’t leave behind . . .
In If You Find Me by Emily Murdoch, a broken-down camper hidden deep in a national forest is the only home fifteen year-old Carey can remember. The trees keep guard over her threadbare existence, with the one bright spot being Carey’s younger sister, Jenessa, who depends on Carey for her very survival. All they have is each other, as their mentally ill mother comes and goes with greater frequency.
Until that one fateful day their mother has disappeared for good, and two strangers arrive.
Suddenly, the girls are taken from the woods and thrust into a bright and perplexing new world of high school, clothes and boys.
I Hunt Killers by Barry Lyga
From the novel:
It was a beautiful day. It was a beautiful field. Except for the body. Jazz is the son of the world's most infamous serial killer, and for Dear Old Dad, "Take Your Son to Work Day" was year-round.
Jazz has witnessed crime scenes the way cops wish they could-from the criminal's point of view.
Now, with bodies piling up in the sleepy town of Lobo's Nod, Jazz must work with the police to prove that murder doesn't run in the family.
