Copeland Hoofbeat
February 8, 2018
From the Principal
It's February, and love is in the air at Copeland! Our students have so much to look forward to this month.
We love our spirit nights! We have Bahama Bucks on Feb. 7th, Marco Pizza on Feb. 8th, and Chick-Fil-A hosted by our 3rd grade team on Feb. 15th. We are also excited about the return of our Boosterthon Fun Run! As you all know, this is a major fundraiser for our school, and we would LOVE your support! The fundraiser begins on Feb. 21st and concludes with the Fun Run on Mar. 2nd. We are hoping for an outdoor run this year, weather permitting.
Our awesome 3rd graders will be performing their music program for us on Feb. 13th at 6:30 p.m. We will have a short P.T.O. meeting at 6:15 p.m. and all are invited to attend. We love that our P.T.O. is selling tickets to our Father Daughter Dance to be held at Copeland on Saturday, Feb. 17th from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. We will love seeing all the girls and their fathers dressed up for this fun occasion!
We will love having all our students here at school on our make-up day, Feb. 19th. This day will now be a regular instructional day to make up for lost time due to the ice storms.
We are entering our testing season, and our 4th and 5th graders will be taking their benchmark tests on Feb. 20th and Feb. 21st. Thank you for understanding that we cannot allow visitors on those two days. On Feb. 22nd, we are celebrating the 99th day of school. Students may wear J.J. Watt gear that day. 5th graders will be eating in their classrooms, so there are no lunch visitors for them that day. Friday, Feb. 23rd is Go Texas Day, and our Kindergarteners, 1st graders, and 2nd graders will have “Dance Across Texas.” You are invited to come out to see these precious Colts dancing their hearts out! On Feb. 23, we are also celebrating the 100th day of school. We will not have lunch visitors this day as our dances will be in the cafeteria, and many grade levels will be eating in the classrooms. Thanks for understanding. Our Horizons students will be attending Da Vinci Day on Saturday, Feb. 24th. Wow, what a busy and fun month of activities!
I truly love all our Colts! Thank you for sharing them with us each day.

Congratulations to these awesome students who represented Copeland well at the annual Horizons Showcase at the Berry Center on Jan. 29, 2018.
Friendly Reminder from our Registrar
Your child’s school attendance is very important. All students are required to provide a note from a parent or guardian for each absence within three days of the absence or consecutive absences. This note is to include student’s name and grade, reason for absence, telephone number of parent or guardian, and signature of parent or guardian. Feel free to fax, or deliver the note in person to the front office. If the student does not bring a note for being absent, the absence is considered unexcused.
Thank you for working with us, we greatly appreciate it.

Dear Parents,
The Harris County Health Department recently alerted area schools of an increase in influenza-like illness. To protect the health of our community, please remind your students about the importance of covering their cough/sneeze, encourage frequent and thorough hand-washing throughout the day and consider obtaining an influenza vaccine. Students with fever over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, chills, cough, sore throat, headache or body aches should be kept home from school and should be evaluated by a licensed healthcare provider for appropriate treatment. Your assistance with these measures will keep our community well.
Please adhere to the District/State policy regarding fevers.
III. Temperatures
The Texas Department of State Health Services defines a fever as an oral temperature above or equal to 100.0 degrees Fahrenheit.
The District, as mandated by The Texas Administrative Code of the Department of State Health Services, requires you keep your child home until he /she has been fever free for 24 hours without requiring fever reducing medication. This allows the child to recover and prevents unnecessary exposure of classmates to potential contagious illnesses.
Also, please be sure to return any completed referral forms for vision, hearing, spinal or Acanthosis Nigracans to the clinic as soon as possible .
If you have any questions feel free to call the clinic at 281-856-1406 (Parents please put this in your cell phones and keep your voice mail box empty for messages). The fax number is 281-463-5510.
Thank you,

Dear Community Partner,
Prevent Blindness Texas invites you to our upcoming Children's Vision Screening Trainings on Thursday, February 22nd to learn how to identify children with a vision problem and connect children and their families to the programs and services they will need to succeed. Please feel free to share with your students and volunteers in your district who are interested in becoming certified children’s vision screeners.
The class will cover the Vision Screening Training in accordance with the rules provided by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS). This course will also incorporate training on the Spot Vision Screener. Automated screening is an optional method of screening that is especially useful for screening children through age 5. The Spot Vision Screener is a handheld, portable device designed to help users quickly and easily detect vision issues on patients from 6 months of age. The Spot screens both eyes at once from a nonthreatening 3-foot distance. The touch-screen display allows for one-touch activation, simple management of patient data entry, and easy configuration for both vision screening and auto-refraction applications.
Each newly trained children's vision screener will be equipped with:
- One (1) reversible Texas approved Sloan Letter/Tumbling “E” Chart.
- One (1) Texas approved HOTV Chart Set.
- One (1) Penlight to conduct Hirschberg Corneal Light Reflex Test.
- Children's Vision Screening Certification to participants who successfully meet specified training criteria. Certification is valid for five (5) years.
- Spot Vision Screener Certification to participants who successfully meet specified training criteria.
Please note that Prevent Blindness Texas is a certified TDSHS instructor for the Children’s Vision Screener course.
