Six Simple Machines
Lever
A lever is a machine consisting of a rigid bar resting on a pivot. When a downward force is applied on one side of the bar the other side elevates. An example of a lever would be a seesaw.
Pulley
A pulley is a wheel with a grooved rim for carrying a line, when on side of the line the other can carry heavier objects to an elevated point. An example of a pulley is a cargo lift.
Wedge
A wedge is a piece of hard material shaped as a triangle used for holding, raising or splitting objects. An example of a wedge would be a an axe.
Wheel & Axle
A wheel & axle is a simple machine consisting of a rope attached to a wheel onto a cylindrical drum to produce mechanical advantage. An example of this machine would be wheels on a car or wagon.
Inclined Plane
An inclined plane is a plane inclined at an horizontal angle. An example of an inclined plane would be a slide or a ramp.
Screw
A screw is a spirally grooved metal pin used to join things together by rotating it. An example of a screw would be the one explained but a jar lid also follows the same concept.
