Principal Message: Conversations About School
"Let's see what you brought home."
Look at completed work to find out what your child is learning and how well she's doing. You could comment on her math work or inquiry project, for instance.
"Describe a book you enjoyed today."
This gives you an idea of what your child likes to read. Then, build a daily reading habit by asking what she'd like to read at home. Encourage your child's reading and listening skills by reading aloud to her and letting her read to you.
"Tell me what you learned that you'd like to know more about."
Use her interests as jumping off points for activities to share. If she likes geometry, you might hunt for shapes together. If she's fascinated by how animals adapt to winter, take her to the library to research the subject or to the zoo to see live animals.
After School & Dinner Time Questions
Asking "How was school today?" might not get you far. Instead, ask questions like these for a better picture of your child's day:
- What's the coolest thing that happened? What wasn't so cool?
- Pretend you're the teacher. How would you describe your day?
- What made you laugh today?
- How were you principled today?
- What was the most creative thing you did?
- How were you caring today? How was someone caring to you?
Enjoy your conversation tonight and the weekend.

Physical Education
In physical education class, the students have been training hard to make it into the Olympics. Last week the students entered the gym as Olympians and selected teammates and countries to represent. They found their counties on the maps located on our Olympic Wall and carry their country flag with them throughout class. The teams participated in Olympic Torch Tag, created their own tabata exercise routines for training day and learned about the Olympic Torch, the Olympic rings and the colors of the Olympics. The next couple classes, the Olympians will be competing in various modified Winter Olympic events, focusing on teamwork and being principled while representing their country.
The 100th day of school is around the corner and we will be celebrating it in class. Our fitness focus will include math as usual, but there will be an emphasis on various ways to accumulate 100 exercises.

Breakfast Logic
Breakfast is a good thing! When students need to take achievement tests, schools strongly urge them to eat breakfast first on testing days. Why? Because we know that when students eat breakfast, they perform better and are better able to concentrate. Yet on “normal” days, many students fail to eat breakfast; they’re too busy, too tired, or just don’t know what to eat.
Let’s help students to perform better every day, by making sure they eat a healthy breakfast at home or at school.
Opt-Out for State Assessments
Parents/Guardians who opt their students out of the Smarter Balanced Assessments must sign the attached form. Parent opting their students out of the ELPA21 or the OAKS Science must submit a letter requesting the opt out due to the student's disability or a religious objection. Both types of opt outs need to be entered into the correct Opt Out Program in Synergy. Students who are opted out from testing must have their tests blocked in TIDE by the School Test Coordinator. Please send the completed forms sent to Kay Jenkins in T&L.
Emergency Preparedness Parent Info. Session – 2/21, 6:30 p.m.
Please join us for our second parent information session of 2018 on Wednesday, February 21st at 6:30 p.m. in the library. Last month we learned about Standard Response Protocol from our Washington County Safety Resource Officer. This month we will have BSD Emergency Coordinator Ashley Vanderjagt here to present an overview of BSD’s emergency preparedness program and improvements, BSD emergency protocols and drills, parent reunification, and emergency preparedness at home, including earthquake readiness and response. (The February PTC meeting will follow the session).
Science Fair is Coming!
Our annual science fair Thursday, March 15th from 5 to 7pm in the gym. Students may conduct their own science experiment or engineering & design display at home and prepare a display board to show their knowledge and hard work. This is an optional home activity for all students grades K-5.
Immunization Exclusion Day – February 21, 2018
State law requires that all children in public and private schools, preschools, Head Start and certified child care facilities have up-to-date immunizations, or have a religious or medical exemption.
Parents or guardians will receive a letter in early February if their child’s immunization record shows that he or she has not received the required vaccinations. Children will not be able to attend school or childcare starting February 21, 2018, if their records on file show missing immunizations.
