Vladimir
Didi
Vladimir is...
He appears to be the more intelligent one between him and Estragon when they are first introduced. Vladimir walks in short, stiff strides and is heavier than Estragon.
Friendship
Here we see an odd friendship between Vladimir and Estragon. They seem to irritate each other but they still rely on one another for many things. Although Vladimir seems as though he is the caretaker for Estragon, he is still dependent upon Estragon for some type of companionship.
1. VLADIMIR
Together again at last! We'll have to celebrate this. But how? (He reflects.) Get up till I embrace you.
ESTRAGON
(irritably) Not now, not now
2. VLADIMIR
I'm glad to see you back. I thought you were gone forever.
ESTRAGON
Me too.
Economics
Vladimir and Estragon are both bums. They have both lived in the same economic class. This could be part of the reason why they are so close. They understand each other and they are dependent on one another.
Empathetic
Vladimir finds it hard to watch or hear about suffering or pain. He himself suffers from chronic pain. He becomes empathetic when he views of hears about other people's suffering.
When Vladimir first sees Lucky, he immediately wants to help him.
Noise of Lucky falling with all his baggage. Vladimir and Estragon turn towards him, half wishing half fearing to go to his assistance. Vladimir takes a step towards Lucky, Estragon holds him back by the sleeve.
VLADIMIR: Let me go!
ESTRAGON: Stay where you are!
Religion
Vladimir is empathetic in a way because of his views on life or in a sense his religion. Religion is defined as a pursuit or interest to which someone ascribes supreme importance. Although he says religion doesn't make much sense, he still has the morals there and he also seems to believe that people should be treated fair.
Suffering is a big theme in Vladimir's life, so it is something that is of significant importance. Because he has experience suffering first hand, he doesn't want others to suffer as he has.
A caretaker
We see Vladimir as a caretaker for Estragon in a way. This could be because he views Estragon as his family. He seems to handle food rations and be the brain of the two while Estragon is the body so he appears to be the care taker/manager of the two.
VLADIMIR: Boots must be taken off every day, I'm tired telling you that. Why don't you listen to me?
ESTRAGON: (feebly) Help me!
VLADIMIR: It hurts?
Family
This ties into family. It seems as though Estragon is Vladimir's family. Because of this, Vladimir takes care of Estragon. He expresses how dependent he is on him in the play a few times.
