Third graders studied a series of landscape paintings by the artist Claude Monet. They learned how he studied one subject, haystacks, during different times of the day and in different seasons and how light can affect the mood and emotions of paintings. First, students learned about landscape paintings and foreground, middleground, and background as well as a horizon line. Students then drew two haystacks, one closer and one further away. Next, students decided what time of day and season their haystack is drawn. Students added a light source to the side of their haystack. Lastly, students added a cast shadow on the ground, showing space by using lighter colors in the background, and colored their pictures according to time of day and season using a material of their choice.
