NEW! Campus Beautification Days & Garden Club
Mrs Sterner’s vision for the grant is to upgrade the planters in the 6th, 7th and 8th grade villages to:
- Provide color and habitat for butterflies, hummingbirds and more (6th and 8th grade)
- Create a thriving and diverse succulent garden (7th grade) Cultivate a love of gardening and lifelong gardeners in the MVMS student community
- Grow students who are well educated on waterwise, location appropriate gardening
- Use the MVMS plants as a source of cuttings and saplings that can be shared, along with growing tips and instructions, with the MVMS community
The grant funding is the first step in achieving this vision. Most important is to get our MVMS community involved. HERE IS WHERE YOU CAN HELP!
- Students: Join Garden Club’s intro party on Wednesday, February 15th in the 6th grade village from 2:45 - 4:00pm. Pizza and more will be served! Student voice and participation is vital to making this happen!
- Parents: If you have waterwise gardening expertise, please share in helping finalize our plans for planting!
- Community: Sign up to join HERE Campus beautification work parties on Saturday March 4th and April 29th from 10 am- 1pm. The grant calls for students, with community support, to install and enhance our gardens.
Student sign up form coming soon. Let’s help our students achieve this goal!

New! Updated-February is Black History Month
February is a time we celebrate Black History by recognizing Black heroes, Black innovators, Black changemakers, and reflect on the impact many have had throughout history and for us today. At home, you can explore and enjoy a Black History Month Exhibit (created by The Book Wrangler) and a PUSD slide deck of resources to promote Black History Month.
Here at Mesa Verde, we are participating in the 23rd National African American Read-In by reading books across the genres written by Black authors. MVMS Eagles will have the opportunity to read, recommend, and promote the books they read. Established in 1990 by the National Council of English Teachers Black Caucus, the National African American Read-In has developed from being a solely instructional event to a celebration of the lively contributions and essential role African American literature, art, and artists play in American society (source). We are highlighting the National Council of Teachers of English recommendations and other Black authors we have in our library. If you would like to add to our collection for the African-American Read-In, you can use our Amazon Wish List as a guide. We are appreciative of the books donated to our library for the African American Read-In; students have already started checking them out! Thank you, Eagle community, for your continued support!

Book Club Meeting in the Library
Mesa Verde Career Fair
We are in need of representatives for the following career clusters:
Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources - Vets? Vet techs? Soil scientists? Anyone who works with plants? Environmentalists?
Architecture & Construction - Architects? Construction companies? HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical?
Government & Public Administration - City Manager? Fish and Game? Postmaster? National Security? Translator? Diplomat?
Hospitality & Tourism - Disneyland? Hotel industry? Restaurant industry?
Human Services - Preschool teacher? Banker? Insurance? Nonprofit worker?
Manufacturing - Engineering? Maintenance and Repairs? Machinist? Metal worker? Quality control?
Transportation, Distribution & Logistics - Airline pilot? Federal Aviation Administration? Mechanic? Travel agent?
On Friday, March 3rd from 11:30-1:00 p.m. we are planning a Career Fair in our gymnasium. There are 16 career clusters to explore! With so many different career clusters and pathways within those clusters we want to broaden our students' horizons and open their minds to the many opportunities that abound.
Can we count on you? We are looking for parent volunteers and community members who represent the above mentioned career clusters both at the professional (4-year college degree or more) and the paraprofessional (apprenticeship, certificate, 2-year college degree) levels.
We are looking for people who are enthusiastic about their career and want to share that enthusiasm with middle schoolers! Students will want to know:
- Why did you choose this career?
- What training did you receive and where you went to college (if applicable)?
- If you could wave a magic want what is one thing you'd like to change about your career
- What is one thing you just love about your career?
*Students LOVE visuals, manipulatives and free stuff so bring your pens, pencils, frisbees, hats, water bottles, keychains, stickers, buttons, etc. Each student will receive a MVMS drawstring backpack at check-in.

NEW! Thank you from Operation Gratitude!
Thank you!
I wanted to personally reach out and say how much we appreciate the support you have shown for Operation Gratitude. I am currently on deployment and received one of the care packages; it has truly brought some extra joy into my life being so far from home. Please keep up the good work as I know there are many more of my brothers and sisters in the service that will be just as grateful as me.
Again, thank you very much!
Very Respectfully,
AZ3F, S.M.

COUNSELING CORNER
NEW! National School Counseling Week
School Counselors work to maximize student success, promoting access and equity for
all students. As vital members of the school leadership team, School Counselors are certified, experienced educators with a master’s degree in school counseling. The combination of their training and experience makes them an integral part of the total educational program.
We have three full-time School Counselors at MVMS: Lisa Marcotte (last names A-G), Beth Huppert (last names H-O), and Brooke Snow (last names P-Z). Learn more about the MVMS School Counseling program here: https://www.smore.com/tr3xgk-mvms-counseling

NEW! Parent Education Events
The Palomar Council PTA JEDI Committee (Parents for Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion), Poway Unified School District and TransFamily Support Services are hosting an LGBTQ+ a parent education event series in March.
The event for elementary age families will be March 14th, from 6:30-8pm.
The event for the Middle and High School age families will be March 16th, from 6:30-8pm.
We especially want to center students' voices in this event. We need to identify students who would like to be on a panel where we envision 4-5 students at each event. We'll have a rehearsal in advance to help them prepare, and it will be a casual conversation between students and Evan Johnson from TransFamily. In terms of safety, those interested in attending will register with identifying information, and location info will not be sent until the day of or day prior to the event. Questions will be written and reviewed by Evan (who will moderate both events). And it is being advertised as a safe space for LGBTQ+ community.
Click Here to register for the events.
Click Here to register students interested in being on the panel.
Thank you,
Evan Alyssa Johnson, BSW

GENERAL INFORMATION
The difference between a Guest, a Visitor and a Volunteer as per the PUSD Board Policies.
1. A Visitor is defined as an individual who, with school district authorization, attends a student performance, special event, festival, open house, back-to-school event, sports event, athletic competition, etc. A visitor may either be accompanied or unaccompanied by school district staff. Designated school district administrative personnel are to make this determination. A visitor is usually not required to sign a registry.
Example: Your school is being recognized for achievement and members of SDCOE are coming to watch students or your school is hosting a Jr. Olympic competition.
2. A Guest is defined as an individual who, with school district approval, assists students, schools, and teachers on a non-regular basis or who individually observes a classroom or activity. A guest may also assist with educational programs or with special events on an occasional or infrequent basis. A guest shall immediately report his or her presence at the school office or at the designated school location upon arrival at the school and sign a guest registry.
Example: Your school is hosting the book fair, a play where parents are coming to watch, or a teacher needs help in the classroom with a one- or two-day tie-dye t-shirt project for the jog-a-thon. A class is hosting a party or a fun run.
3. A Volunteer is defined as an individual who, with school district authorization, voluntarily assists school districts, schools, educational programs, or students on a regular and ongoing basis. A volunteer is required to complete a Volunteer Application and have a Megan’s Law Background Check or a State and/or Federal Background Check completed.
Example: A parent is assisting with a weekly and ongoing project such as the running club or Lego league. A grandparent is helping in music or art classes weekly. A field trip chaperone and/or driver (usually requires Level 1 and 2 applications).
If someone is coming to help in the class only one or two times, they are not considered volunteers therefore do not need to fill out a Level 1 application.
