New Walking Ticket Procedures
We need to make sure students are following through with assigned walking tickets, otherwise the consequence is useless. We are actually teaching students the exact opposite by allowing them to think they can cheat, lie, and get by with it.
From now on, we will do the following:
1.Teachers complete/assign walking tickets. Preferably, students will be assigned to walk 5 min or 10 minutes of recess. Unless it is a serious consequence, students should not have to walk the entire recess. Please keep in mind, the entire recess is about 15-17 minutes. However, that is your decision and there might be times when the entire recess is appropriate.
2. Teachers hand out walking tickets right before recess.
3. Students will take walking ticket outside and hand it to Mr. Mark Huff. His job outside will be to monitor 1st-4th grade walking tickets. He will sign off on the walking ticket once the student completes the task.
4. During the walk, students are not allowed to talk, visit, or stop . They must quietly and continually walk until their time is up.
4. He will hand the child back the walking ticket.
5. After recess, the teacher will collect the walking tickets.
Mr. Huff's job is not to track kids down and enforce them to walk. His job is simply to collect the tickets and monitor the students and the tickets that were handed to him. If you receive walking tickets without his signature, we should assume, the student did not follow the expectation. For kindergarten, we have 8 recess monitors on duty. Sally Sprong will monitor walking tickets for kindergarten. I will have Sally and Mark come around to each classroom and introduce themselves so that student who know exactly who is in charge and where they will be standing (by the basketball hoops). Students who are walking will walk around 1/2 of the perimeter of the playground, down by basketball hoops and around until they get to the equipment area. They will cross the playground and Mr. Huff will be able to keep his eyes on them.
Our hiccup will come when Mr. Huff or Sally Sprong is absent. At that time, I will ask Loan Nguyen to cover. Mr. Huff and Sally will need to communicate to Lori Shaw or Loan if they are to miss recess on a particular day.
Please keep in mind that if you have the same students getting walking tickets every single day for the same offense, this consequence is not working for that child. We may need to brainstorm additional consequences and I have some ideas if you are in need of some.
New Colorful Flag Procedures for recess.
Another area of challenge for our recess staff, is getting the students lined up and ready to come in from recess. I have given a lot of thought to this situation. Currently, the recess staff, blow the whistles to signal the end of recess about 5 minutes before lunch is supposed to start. This is a long while for students to stand in line and this is where the majority of behaviors are happening. Also it means recess is actually 15 minutes in length. By lining up this way, alternating classes will get a few extra minutes of recess and we will only have one class lining up at a time. I'll be around Monday morning to show students their class flag. Please take one-two minutes and review the new recess procedures with students.
From now on the following procedure will be implemented.
- Recess staff will blow the first whistle at 3 minutes before lunch is to start.
- They will wave a flag color that will coordinate with each classroom.
- The person waving the big colorful flag will be standing on the playground by the recess cart.
- Students will stop and watch for their class flag. They will quickly run and line up in ABC order and enter the building.
- As soon as the first class is inside the door and walking to lunch, a second whistle and flag will be signaled. This will continue until all five classrooms are inside. Any student that does not come when their flag is waved, will be at the very back of the lunch line.
Upcoming Staff Meeting
I have tried to keep our staff meetings consistent and scheduled for the third Tuesday of every month. The October meeting is scheduled for October 15. However, with parent teacher conferences scheduled for the same week, some teachers would prefer to meet on October 8th. Please let me know on Monday if October 8th would NOT work for you. If the majority of teachers can make it on October 8th, we will change the staff meeting to October 8 from 3:00-4:00 pm.

The Science of Happiness
Student and educator social-emotional wellness is a top priority for the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE). In January, IDOE released the social-emotional competencies for K-12 students. In partnership with Butler University, IDOE has created The Science of Happiness course, designed for educators to promote their own social-emotional wellness. Participants will earn 45 professional growth plan points after successfully completing the course. Please promote The Science of Happiness with educators in your district by sharing this short promotional video.
