April 2022
Longfellow Elementary
A Note from Mrs. Heckenlaible...
Dear Parent or Guardian,
Spring has sprung and with it brings state testing for grades 3-8 and grade 11. It is the time of year when the Mitchell School District students can showcase what they’ve learned throughout the year (and hopefully the gaps we’ve closed due to absences during COVID). South Dakota is part of the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium where students across the nation are being assessed on common core standards. Longfellow students will test from April 5 – May 6.
Please keep this in mind when scheduling appointments as we primarily test in the mornings. It is important for our learners to be on time so they can start the testing session with their classmates. We appreciate your efforts to ensure our Longfellow students have a positive testing experience. A good night’s sleep, a healthy breakfast, and encouraging words to do the best they can are a few ways that parents can assist their children. Preparing our children for academic success requires a partnership between home and school. Our Longfellow teachers feel very fortunate to be able to work with such supportive families. Thank you for all you do!
It's time to register your child for the 2022-2023 school year. Please complete your ‘Annual Information Update’ for the 2022-2023 school year. Please follow the online directions, in this newsletter, to update your information for your Begindergarten-4th grade child/ren, during the month of April. All information updates need be completed by May 1, 2022. This meets the requirements for registering your child for Longfellow for the 2022-2023 school year. Providing completed forms and updated information will assist us for the upcoming school year. If you have questions, please call the Longfellow office at 995-3092.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Heckenlaible

Super Sportsmanship!
April Fitness Challenge
Power / Balance / Coordination
Power - the ability of muscles to exert maximum force in the shortest amount of time, like when you run or swim.
Balance - the athlete’s ability to stay in control of their body’s position. Often this is their ability to remain upright, but this is not always the case. A person can be well balanced performing a yoga move or while dancing.
Coordination - the ability to use different parts of the body together smoothly and efficiently. Changing from one foot position to another requires coordination.
Baseball, dancing, running, swimming, volleyball, hopscotch, jump roping, and riding a bike or scooter are just a few ideas. Be creative, get active, and have fun!!!
DO YOU STILL NEED TO JOIN IN ON THE FUN?
Families and students are encouraged to work together on activities at home throughout the month.
As you work on these activities outside of school, take a picture at least once a month and post it to our private Facebook group.
Our private Facebook group is called Longfellow Lions Family Fitness Component of the Month Challenge. Search the group and ask to join. If that doesn’t work, send a message to Mrs. Eitemiller and you will be added to the group.
There are many amazing prizes!!!
Make sure to post a picture of you in action or email it to Heidi.Eitemiller@k12.sd.us. You never know when you might be the winner of an amazing prize!
Have fun!

Junior Achievement Makes A Difference!
We were excited to welcome back Junior Achievement (JA) for the 2021-22 school year! JA volunteers shared their knowledge with our students about careers, money, owning a business, and ethics.
JA volunteers teach hands on interactive lessons while sharing their own career journey. By sharing their personal and professional stories it allows students to start making a connection between their schoolwork and their future careers. We appreciate the time JA volunteers spend in the classroom making an impact on South Dakota’s future workforce!
JA strives to empower students to achieve their dreams and seeks to instill hope for a promising future. This year, nearly 2,000 JA classroom volunteers committed to teaching JA programs reaching over 50,000 South Dakota students.
Please extend a special thank you to the volunteers and teachers listed below who participated in JA during the 2021-22 school year. If you are interested in sharing your knowledge and business experience with students in our community or would like to sponsor a student for $25, please contact the JA office at (605)336-7318 or jasd@ja.org.

Habits of Mind
Thinking and communicating with clarity and precision - Words like, nice, OK, fine, stuff, junk, etc., are non-descriptive words. They tell us a vague idea of what you're talking about. When thinking and speaking, use specific words to describe what you're trying to get across. Effective communicators use detailed descriptors
