How to Get Involved:
Staff Spotlight
Mrs. Sparks - 8th grade English On Level and PreAP/GT
1. How long have you been teaching at SJ? Six wonderful years
2. Would you rather win the lottery or work at the perfect job?
I would never choose to win the lottery – that uses up all your blessings in one shot! I’m very lucky in little things all the time, and I wouldn’t waste that. People who win the lottery have a much greater chance of disaster happening to them. I would win and then get hit by a bus or something.
I work at the perfect job – not extraordinary money, but enough money. Not all the time off I could want, but a lot compared to most jobs. Many people have to look outside of work for personal fulfillment, but my feeling of doing good in the world is built in to my work. In addition, I have a really great time doing what I do!
3. What would you most like to tell your 13 year old self?
Bless my thirteen year old self’s heart! If only I could tell her to slow down, and not be in such a rush to be independent. I would tell her to lose the attitude, work and play less, and study more.
Mr. Wennerlind - 7th grade Social Studies, Texas History
2. What are your hobbies? In my free time I love to play Ultimate Frisbee and I helped start Midland’s first ever Ultimate Frisbee Club, which has grown to over thirty members! I also enjoy competitive Team Trivia, and I’m actually attending a Team Trivia Finals event in Las Vegas this coming weekend. Other interests of mine include traveling, songwriting, and board games.
3. If you could choose to do anything for a day, what would it be? I would spend all day discovering an unexplored beach with friends! I visited Folly Beach, South Carolina this summer and I LOVED IT!
Motivating our Mustangs to RISE UP!
Welcome to a new school year! I would like to take a brief moment to tell you about a program unique to San Jacinto.
The Mustang Motivator has been a positive reward program for students who model good behavior on campus. Through a system of “punches” on a card given to students every six weeks, students are earning the right to attend a free food and activity party at the end of each six-week term. Punches are given for behavior violations, dress code violations, excessive tardiness and other poor choices that interfere with learning. Our goal is to give classroom teachers and staff a way to decrease interruption and office referrals. Students with less than three punches at the end of the six-weeks not only get to attend the party, but also get in the drawing for gift cards and free hot lunch. Students with zero punches on their card can even earn an entire week of no uniform.
We have made new and exciting improvements this year based on the student and staff surveys we took at the end of last year. This program is supported and generously funded by our PTA and the MISD Education Foundation. These organizations AND our teachers and administration truly care about your Mustang!
We hope that you will ask your Mustang student about his or her participation in the program and encourage him or her to RISE UP to the challenge of good behavior on our campus. For more information, or to get involved in the Mustang Motivator at SJ, please contact me.
