Indus Valley: Writing
Statement: Writing changed the way that business dealings were done and history was kept.
The writing system that the Indus Valley Civilization used was Sanskrit. It was pictographic, which means that their writing was small pictures. Each picture represented a certain event.
The Indus Valley people used writing to tell tales and to write down poems about their gods. Most of their writing was about a god named Brahma, who is the god of creation. In pictographs Braha had four heads and four arms.
Writing was also used for keeping religious records and to write down measurements to build houses. Another example of Indus Valley writing was religious songs and hymns.
Aryn Religious writing was called Vedas.
In Indus Valley, the Scribes were the only ones that could read and write.
- Writing was done by using a pointed stick in soft clay, or with a sharp tool.
