ELA
We are beginning our next units on Theme and Figurative Language. We will be combining these together to help incorporate into our 3rd person narrative writing. The kids come to 5th grade with a general understanding of theme, so we will be building on this understanding and pushing their thinking to a higher level.
For writing, we are beginning our next writing unit on 3rd person narratives. We will work on incorporating dialogue into our stories and developing our characters in a way that makes them interesting.
For homework, the kids will have a nightly requirement of reading for 30 minutes. I was informed by many kids that they are not reading at home. This is currently all I am giving as an expectation for them. The students will be given their new goals next week. I know they have a stronger understanding of the importance of pacing themselves to ensure they have a better chance to meet their goals. AR is an expectation that they will have all through middle school, so developing these habits and fulfilling requirements is good to figure out now as they approach actual letter grades.
Science
Our next unit will continue to focus on Matter, but we will cover different topics, which include:
- States of matter
- Physical changes
- Chemical changes
- Mixtures and solutions
Donations Needed: (In order to perform some of the hands on learning labs, I am asking for a few donations if you are able. It would be much appreciated and contribute greatly to our learning! Thank you in advance.)
- Chex/Trail Mix
- Empty, cleaned out, clear plastic bottles (12-20 oz)
- Dixie Cups
- All shades of food coloring
- Sandwich bags
- Vegetable Oil (any size)
Social Studies
For social studies, we are in our geography unit. The kids have tested on oceans and continents, southwest, and west and did really well as a whole! I am impressed with their study skills with these. Memorization can be very hard to some. Our next region is the midwest region. I am planning to test this on Wednesday, October 16. Some helpful sites are sheppardsoftware.com and stack the states. A fun song for the kids to listen to as well is "Tour the States" on Youtube: https://youtu.be/_E2CNZIlVIg
