Note from the Dean

Hi Abes!

Remember that we don't have school on Friday, 2/12 or Monday, 2/15. Did you know this Friday, 2/12 is the Lunar New Year? We are entering the year of the Ox! Learn more about the significance of the Lunar New Year here.

For Black History Month, we received a student entry featuring Henrietta Lacks:

Henrietta Lacks was born in 1920 in Roanoke, Virginia. Lacks died of cervical cancer in 1951. Cells taken from her body without her knowledge were used to form the HeLa cell line, which has been used extensively in medical research since that time. Her cells are the fastest reproducing cells on earth. Her cells today are used to study the human genome, to learn more about how viruses work, and they played a crucial role in the development of the polio vaccine. Although Henrietta Lacks passed away October 4th, 1951, at the age of 31, her cells continue to impact the world.

- Isha (Class of 2022)

Thank you Isha for your Lincoln's Latest contribution! Is there someone you'd like to feature in next week's Lincoln's Latest for Black History Month? Email Ms. Hendrix shendri@tacoma.k12.wa.us.

Submit Student Portraits: Deadline MONDAY 2/15

Please go to the direct Lincoln HS yearbook sales page and use the code: LHS2021 to upload your student portrait for the yearbook. Senior Graduation Ads: Deadline 3/28

Students featured in ads do not see the ads until the yearbook is distributed by the school. Ads can be purchased and created by parents or other family members from www.yearbookforever.com

All Graduations Ads are subject to review by the yearbook staff. If a Graduation Ad needs to be edit or changed, an email will be sent to the Individuals who purchased the ad letting them know what edit or edits that would need to be made. Individuals will resend information and then be sent a revised proof of the ad to be viewed and approved by purchaser to allow time for any adjustments before the yearbooks go to print.

Young Artists and Authors Showcase (YAAS)

For decades, Sister Cities International has leveraged the power of art to transform societies and transcend cultural boundaries through the Young Artists and Authors Showcase (YAAS). The showcase has given youth worldwide the opportunity to express their vision for a more unified, peaceful world through original art and literature.

This year, the Tacoma Sister Cities Council will partner with our international organization to sponsor a local Tacoma Young Artists and Authors Showcase 2021. We would like to invite all young people in the City of Tacoma and in all of Tacoma’s fourteen sister cities to participate in this competition. There will be six categories: Art, Written Word – Prose and Poetry, Music – Original and Reinterpreted and Photography. Up to five winning local entries and five international entries in each category will be entered in the Sister Cities International competition. Please see our website www.tacomasistercities.org for details and entry form. Deadline to enter is March 26th, 2021.

Athletics

Dear Families,

Tacoma Public Schools athletics competition kicks off this week, and we are ready for it! We are so pleased to have our student athletes back, safely training with coaches and teammates.

Under the new guidelines set by Gov. Inslee’s Healthy Washington - Roadmap to Recovery, indoor and outdoor athletic events have limited event capacity. Due to these limitations, Tacoma Public Schools is unable to accommodate spectators at our athletic events.

We know the joy and satisfaction that comes from being a spectator at our high school events. We recognize the disappointment that comes from missing any opportunity to support your student athlete. Still, the health and safety of our students and staff is our priority, so will we continue to follow the guidance offered by Gov. Inslee and the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association.

The good news is that we have entered a contract with the NFHS to provide live streaming for soccer, volleyball and football. All home games will be streamed live at https://www.nfhsnetwork.com/. The monthly pass to watch online is $10.99. Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

James Neil
