D103 Changes to Mask Optional
Hello D103 Families,
I would like to update our community regarding the mask optional/recommended plan. As you know, this week has seen two legal rulings regarding mitigations in schools:
The Joint Committee on Administrative Rules (JCAR) denied the Illinois Department of Health’s (IDPH) request to extend the emergency rules regarding COVID protocols
The Appellate Court ruled last night that the appeal related to the emergency rules regarding COVID was moot based upon the JCAR ruling
The lawsuit from the circuit court will continue to be litigated on the merits of the case, including the Governor’s Executive Order requiring masking in schools.
We have known that our schools would be moving to masks being optional in the very near future. In preparation for this change, the district has:
Implemented Social Emotional Lessons for students regarding being kind and respectful of others’ choices
Asked students how they felt about moving to a mask optional/recommended environment and will continue to follow up with those students who are anxious and worried
Monitored our COVID cases in our schools to watch for declining positive cases
Communicated with families to keep them informed about changes that may occur
Created a Modified Mitigation Plan that will be used moving forward
Due to the multiple factors listed above, masks will be optional/recommended starting Tuesday, February 22. We understand this is a change from our original March 7 date. However, considering all of the factors above, we feel that the time is right to move the date to February 22. We will continue with mitigation protocols including cleaning/sanitizing, quality ventilation, onsite testing, and others. Please note that the move to mask optional/recommended could change based on the ruling of pending litigation or other guidance from federal, state, or local authorities.
As we move to this new phase, please reinforce with your children to treat each other with kindness and respect for the choices each family makes. Thank you for continuing to work with us during this transition.
Sincerely,
Scott Warren, Ed.D
Superintendent of D103 Schools
