Our customer in public education and most importantly at Prestwick STEM Academy is our learners and community. While it is not rocket science as to why I wanted to share a few of the reasons that speak most to me as an instructional leader. According to Reed Guillespe in the Article Building Rapport with Students: 10 Reasons to Greet them at the Door this practice is essential because
- It gives you a chance to connect with every student and to gauge their emotional state.
- Students have a lot to say and we should take the time to listen to them.
- It gives you an opportunity to model (and for students to practice) socially acceptable behaviors, like eye contact, a firm handshake, and good posture.
- You can ask each student a question to formatively assess their understanding of the previous day’s lesson. With some classes I’d take this a step further and ask a question which the students had to get right before entering class.
- Simply greeting students at the door has been proven to increase student attention to learning (on-task behavior) and it establishes teacher rapport with students.
While visiting classrooms this week I was reminded of the power of these quick few minutes. We will continue to use this time to connect, check in and set the tone for our learners and you. Our goal if for every learner, parent and/or visitor to feel welcome anytime they enter our campus. Please feel free to share your feedback on if this is how you feel when you come to Prestwick.

Parent Access to Canvas
Are you using Canvas this year with your students? If so, you will want to check out the following resources. These are guides for the parents of your students, so they can keep up with due dates, reminders, and more going on in your classroom. Linked below are three documents--one is for students, the other two are for parents.
