Principal Update - March Happenings
3rd quarter Interim
4th and 5th grade families should be on the lookout for quarterly interims to review their child's progress. Please check in with your teacher if you have any questions on your child's progress. Conferences are not just for November. We are always eager to discuss how teachers and parents can collaborate for the strengthening of our students. Our teamwork makes all the difference.
I is for Independent
This year we are helping every bluejay to become a CHAMPION. Each month focuses on a different letter of the word, CHAMPION, and a virtue that begins with that letter. March is about the letter I and the virtue Independent. Being independent means "not depending on something else for strength or effectiveness; freestanding". Though we all need each other and greatly depend on each other in important ways, there are also many actions we are able to take independently. Champions become champions because of their independent commitment. A champion's motivation will lead them toward independent practice and hard work. We will teach students of this virtue and how to use it over the month of March.
Our Green School
With the month of March, we will start to see the return of green to our outdoor plant life. We will also celebrate the Wearing 'o the Green on St. Patrick's Day. There is one other Green celebration for March. Edgemere will submit our application to be recertified as a Green School. We were first certified as a Maryland Green School in 2018 and we hope to continue with this recognition for years to come. Many teachers and students have worked diligently to show our desire to care for our environment, which is the heartbeat of a Green School.

Nurse's Notes
March is National Nutrition Month. You’ve heard of the saying, “You are what you eat”. Take a look at this website from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. There are some great ideas, information, and recipes. Wellness and health promotion starts with what we eat.
Library News from Mrs. Bixby
The weather is finally beginning to tease the arrival of Spring and March is announcing the arrival of the following units in library:
Kindergarten – After a brief hiatus to learn about Valentine’s Day, President’s Day, Groundhog’s Day and some famous African Americans, we will be returning to learn more about author Mo Willems.
First Grade – We will begin our visualization unit. Visualization is when readers use the author’s words to create a picture in their mind of what is happening in the story.
Second Grade – We will be finishing our unit on comprehension skills using authentic texts before moving on to learn more about specific genres in the library.
Third Grade – We will be entering the wonderful world of Poetry this month. This unit will continue on into April which is National Poetry Month.
Fourth Grade – We are diving into some amazing literature beginning this month. We will learn about various book awards, the criteria for the award and characteristics of the winners.
Fifth Grade – We will begin our unit about overcoming adversity. This unit explores various types of biological and situational adversities. Students read and compare different stories of real people and fictional characters that face adversity and are able to overcome it with the assistance of others in their communities.

Vocal Music News with Mr. Reaves
5th grade:
We will be exploring and singing major scales. We will create and perform rhythm Ostinatos. We will learn about style characteristics in music, and we are going to write and move to different rhythm patterns as they appear in musical selections.
4th grade: We're going to discover how melody patterns move by step, skip and repeat. We will also listen to sections and events that occur in assorted styles of music.
3rd grade: We are going to play syncopated rhythm patterns, use sixteenth notes to create a rhythmic composition and use contrasting steady beat movements to indicate different sections of a song.
2nd grade: We will listen to and indicate crescendo and Decrescendo in songs. We are going to compose songs that indicate specific notes and learn about dotted notes.
K/1st grade: We will follow notations for a sound that lasts 1 beat long, and learn about musical silence and how it impacts music. We are going to learn about rests in music. We will be identifying changing tempos.
