Farley Elementary School's Weekly Family Update
THOUGHTS and THANKS
Dear Farley Families,
As shared with you this summer, McGovern Subaru of Acton, selected Farley (for the second year in a row) to be the recipient of one of their Subaru Loves Learning Grants. Each year, Subaru teams up with Adopt-A-Classroom.org to donate funds to schools across the United States with funds to use next year. Six teachers have volunteered to be in charge of the $3,000 they gifted to us. These staff members have met three times already this year and selected new STEM products that will be utilized in our Courtyard Classroom. In addition to the $3,000 Adopt-a-Classroom money granted us, McGovern Subaru also raised another $700 for us and did a supply drive for our teachers. Two weeks ago, McGovern Subaru employees visited Farley for the first time and dropped off a mountain of materials-see picture below. The extra funds they donated to us are going to be used to purchase an outdoor, weatherproof projector and screen to make our outdoor Courtyard Classroom even more functional. We are over the moon with excitement and are humbled by McGovern Subaru's generosity. McGovern Subaru staff will also be at our Fun Run cheering on our students and having caregivers write special thank you notes to staff. Make sure to stop by their table to thank them!
We are halfway through our Fun Run Fundraiser and half-way to our $30,000 goal!
Two hundred and seventy-nine students are registered now which is 65% of our total student population. We would love to get this number up to 70/75% so we can do a school wide PJ day! Classroom teachers will be sending home either in hard copy form or via email "Weekend Challenge Fliers"-so be on the lookout for those!
Here's a reminder of the steps you can take to help us reach our $30,000:

WELCOME ABA THERAPIST MRS. OLIINYK!
Kara Oliinyk recently joined the Farley preschool team as an ABA therapist. Mrs. Oliinyk completed her Bachelor’s degree at Cazenovia College in New York where she became certified to teach Early Childhood and Special Education. Before coming to Farley, she worked as a preschool teacher for five years in Lexington, Massachusetts. A fun fact to know is that Mrs. Oliinyk’s husband is from Ukraine, so she taught herself to speak Russian during college. When Mrs. Oliinyk is not at school, you can find her spending time with her two children, husband and her dog Nacho. As a family, they enjoy spending time at Lake Winnepesaukee, playing board games and going on “adventure days.” Mrs. Oliinyk is excited to see what this school year will bring and to be a member of the Hudson community.

FARLEY HOME and SCHOOL ASSOCIATION UPDATES
JOIN US FOR OUR FALL WALK, BIKE, OR ROLL TO SCHOOL WEDNESDAY!
In an effort to encourage physical activity and improve health and learning, Farley Elementary School will be participating in 3- Walk, Bike, or Roll to School Wednesdays this year. October 4th will be our first official Walk to School Wednesday. We are encouraging all students to walk, or roll to school that day. If you usually drive your child to school or he/she/they takes the bus, please consider biking or walking with your child. To ensure safety, caregivers of students walking to school should make sure their children have adult supervision or that they travel in groups. We look forward to seeing countless Farley families walking, biking, or rolling to school that day!
Here are several reasons why we promote Walk, Bike, or Roll to School Days:
- Physical Activity
- Teaching safe pedestrian and cycling skills to children
- Awareness of how walkable a community is
- Concern for the environment
- Reducing traffic congestion, pollution, and speed near schools
- Sharing time with community members, parents, and children
PLEASE JOIN OUR NEXT HOME AND SCHOOL MEETING!
Pleas join Farley's Home and School Association's next meeting on Wednesday, October 4th at 6:00pm. We will meet in the library. Free childcare will be provided! You can also attend virtually using this link: meet.google.com/kyj-jsgf-abr

WHAT IS SEPAC?
SEPAC (Special Education Parent Advisory Council of Hudson) is an all-volunteer parent advisory council consisting of parents, guardians, community members and educators. Their meetings are open and they welcome new members. Here is a link to their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/SEPACHudson/

September 26, 2023 6:30-8:00 virtual session-WHAT IS GOING ON IN THAT BRAIN OF THEIRS? (The Neurobiology of Emotion)
Have you ever wondered what is going on inside your child’s brain? This presentation will use information from the Biosocial Theory to explain how brains react to different interactions and how that affects emotional responses. By understanding where our child is on their “emotion curve” and where we ourselves are on our own “emotion curve” we increase the chances that our responses will lead to more effective interactions. We will discuss different ways to respond to our children to shift their emotion curve and improve communication.
October 3, 2023 6:30-8:00 virtual session-WHAT IS GOING ON IN THAT BRAIN OF THEIRS?
(The neurobiology of thinking and behavior) Have you ever wondered what is going on inside your child’s brain? This presentation will use information from the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics to explain how stress, environment, and interpersonal connection all shift our brain function and thus our thinking and behaviors. You will learn how to observe and understand behaviors in a different way. We will talk about different things we can do to create an environment and approach that can activate our children’s potential.
October 17, 2023 6:30-8:00 virtual session-UNDERSTANDING ANXIETY
(How do we use an evidence based approach to help our children overcome anxiety)
We will discuss the difference between normal anxiety and anxiety that is clinically problematic. We will also discuss how we as parents can be most helpful to our children and what to look for when looking for effective treatment.
PAW PRINT REWARD STICKERS!
Students get Paw Print Stickers for going above and beyond. When a staff member "catches" them doing something spectacular, they get two stickers-one to wear and one to put on their homeroom Fox poster. When their classroom Fox poster fills up with stickers, they get to have a classroom celebration. If you see a paw print on your child's clothing or backpack, please ask them why they got it.
"ALL THINGS TECHNOLOGY"
Two weeks ago, Ellen Schuck, the Head of Technology for the district, sent out her Technology Newsletter. This publication has essential information about all things related to HPS technology, including how caregivers can access the "ASPEN Parent Portal". Below is the link to her newsletter.
