General News! Week of November 28th- Dec.2nd
Welcome Back !
We hope you all enjoyed your Thanksgiving break and had some time to relax and enjoy your families a bit. Now it is time to get back in full gear, because we only have 3 weeks left in this quarter and our 1st semester! Please remember that we are all available before school from 6:45- 7:15...If your child is in need of any type of assistance this is a great way to get back on track. All they need to do is ask one of us to sign their planner, so that they will be permitted down the hall.
After school camps on Thursday afternoons have been extended for the next three weeks until winter break. We will be inviting some students to continue with groups they have currently been working with. Other students may receive an invitation for an opportunity to complete or re-mediate for a specific teacher. Please look for these to come home this week.
Upcoming Dates to Remember:
Nov.30th & Dec. 2nd-SMMS SPIRIT DAY!!! Wear your red and blue!
Dec. 5th-9th- Book Fair (After School hours on Monday & Thursday will be 2:30-5:30)
Dec. 16th - Last day of 2nd quarter and 1st semester
Dec. 19- Jan. 3rd - Winter Break (Students return to class Jan. 4th)
Social Studies- Mr. Salser
Math- Mrs. McKinney
Welcome back! We are working on the Pythagorean theorem and solving equations. Students will have homework every night this week. On Friday, the students will take a quiz on finding the missing sides of right triangles.
Language Arts- Ms. Waxman
In language arts:
This week we will start the week we will get into the next 4 chapters of our novel study, chapters 5-8. Students will continue making connections with the text in their annotation graphic organizers, but will be working with less guidance than they had with the first 4 chapters. For some this may mean that they need to check out a copy of the book overnight, or perhaps have an online version available to them. We typically focus on a chapter each day. Students are responsible for 3 annotations of their choosing per chapter, as well as writing a summary of the chapter's events. This set will be due after we complete chapter 8. Private Franklin Thompson has been successful so far in his masquerade, but will he be able to pull off his next disguise as a common slave? Stay tuned as he ventures Behind Rebel Lines...
Our Reading Inventory checkpoint results are in, but I haven't had a chance to digest them just yet, and did not have access to them over break...I will try to have both the original test score lexiles, as well as the most recent posted in PowerSchool this week, so you can compare results. I did see many students who have experienced a nice amount of growth already this year! For students who are new to us since the beginning of the year, these results will better help me guide your child for both their independent reading as well as in the classroom.
Radio broadcasts presentations will begin this week. Students will be sharing the information they have gathered with the rest of the class, so that we can all have better background knowledge of the events of this time period.
Hopefully, your break was relaxing enough that everyone had a chance to do some reading for pleasure. Book 3 of the Independent (Choice) Reading is due by December . There are already a number of students who have already completed this, while we still have a few stragglers who have not completed Book 1 or 2 ! These scores are posted in PowerSchool if you need verification. Please take a minute to touch base with your student to see how they are coming...most just need to get through their first book successfully to see the benefits of this practice. TweenTribune is due by Friday afternoon.
Have a fantastic week!
Science- Mrs. Allen
This week in Science, we will be finishing our second unit of the year, Energy Transfer! Our mastery assessment for this unit will be this Wednesday, so please make sure your child is studying. I sent an email out with a link to a Kahoot practice tool that will really help out! The students will get to show off their solar cookers to the class on Tuesday after the final test run on Monday. The groups who created working machines will be able to make s'mores in their ovens! Thursday and Friday, we will start off our new unit on Waves. Let's have a great week back from break! :)
