Ms. Ashmore's Class - January 29, 2021
This Week in Kindergarten...
The Lion and the Mouse
Our literature connection this week was the well-known fable of "The Lion and the Mouse." In addition to creating a story map of the setting, characters, problem, and solution of Aesop's tale, we talked about the compassion shown by both the lion and the mouse and tied it into our school kindness week. During the Great Kindness Challenge, students gave compliments, shared smiles, wrote notes, and helped out as they worked to complete the tasks given by our First Grade Kindness Ambassadors. Our lesson from "The Lion and the Mouse" fit in perfectly: No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted (Aesop).
The Force of Magnets
After completing our simple machine stations and trying out inclined planes, pulleys, and screws, the kindergartners explored with magnets and figured out how they can be used to move things. We learned that magnets use magnetic force to attract and repel things and tested out items in our classroom to see this amazing force at work. Next week, we will use force and motion to complete a special art project and finish the unit with review and an assessment. On Thursday, the Toymaker (find out more about him here) will come to visit via Zoom. He has already sent us tool kits that the students will use to build their own toys.

Valentine's Day
We will also be having a class Valentine's Day party. We are now able to have parents bring in food to share for our parties. The only stipulations are that the food be brought the day before and that it be store-bought food rather than homemade. Then, I will serve the snacks to the students with gloves. I will send a sign-up link this coming week for you to choose something to send if you like.
