Math: We are studying how multiplication and division are related. This week we'll finish up chapter 3 with a quiz on Tuesday. We'll begin learning how mulitplying by 10's, 100's and 1,000's are related. Monday we're taking the district math quarterly assessment. Homework: Mon. pg. 185-187, Tues. 201-202.
Reading: We'll continue to work on our biography unit this week. We'll start writing our first person presentations as we gather our information and group details together to form logical paragraphs. If time allows we'll conference about our characters and begin making our posters.
Language: Students will be typing their biography presentations on Tuesday. We're going to practice descriptive writing this week as we write about a monster drawing we create. Students will be working on the next four vocab. cards which are: meter or metry, bio, log or logue and mono.
Social Studies: We'll practice finding the longitude and latitude of places this week using our atlases, and we're learning about landforms.
Other items: Our Read-A-Thon began last Thursday. Students are excited about reading as much as they can over the next few weeks. I'll be checking their reading logs every Monday. These should come back and forth to school every day. We appreciate all the support you can give in encouraging your child to read in any of their spare time. Pledges are welcome as well. We'd love students to be able to raise enough money to earn needed money for technology upgrades. The Read-A-Thon is taking the place of our weekly reading logs until Nov. 10. Students will need to have a new book chosen for their second quarter book report by the first week in Nov. We'll discuss this quarter's project in a week.
I still have a few families that need to pay the $10 craft/magazine fee. If you haven't done so please try to get that turned in soon. The magazines are already starting to arrive. Thank you.
We are in the middle of the push for collecting Box Tops for Education. If you have any box tops at home (or have relatives/friends who may be able to help us collect extras) please bring them in before Oct. 25th. The class with the most at that date will earn classroom supplies or healthy snacks. These Box Tops and escrip actually fund quite a few extra programs at our school so they are appreciated. Thank you.
I am out of the classroom on Tuesday due to curriculum meetings in Soldotna. Ms. Smith is an incredible guest teacher, and she'll be covering for me during my absence. Please contact the office if you have questions on Tues.
I look forward to meeting with you during conferences the 24th and 25th. If something comes up and you need to reschedule please contact the office. I am sending home a Three plusses and a wish form for you to complete and bring to your conference. The plusses are postitives about your child. These can be things I may not know about your child or areas of strengths for them. The wish is for an area that you'd like to see growth. Students will be writing their own, and we'll be discussing these during conferences. Thank you.
Scholastic Book Fair (Evening Family and Friends Night Oct. 22nd)
The Scholastic Book Fair is coming soon! Monday October 21th--Friday October 25, the Book Fair will be open all week during the school day. The Book Fair is open all day both days of Parent/Teacher Conferences.
Tuesday October 22th 4:30-6:30 is Family and Friends Night at the Book Fair with door prizes and refreshments. Come one and all and help support the library!
The students go to the Book Fair during their regularly scheduled library classes and during after lunch recess. They may buy books and/or make wish lists that their teachers give to the parents during Parent Teacher Conferences. This gives the parents a chance to see well thought out book requests from their children. Teachers will also pick out books that they wish for in their classroom. Parents and students have a chance to buy a book and donate it to the classroom. A personal placard in the book denotes the donation.
There will be books, science kits, notebooks, posters and more—something for everyone! The students help me run the Book Fair. There will be lots of books and we will have lots of fun!!!!!!!
See you there,
Lisa Whip and

Halloween Party
We'll have our Halloween Parade at two followed by a class party. If you'd like to bring snacks please let me know so I have an idea of how many snacks are coming our way. Currently we have 18 students. Students need to have a costume that is ready to wear: no make-up or hair products can be applied at school. Any hair or make-up needs to be done before they come to school on Halloween (if their costume requires special hair or make-up.)
