Babi yar is a ravine, where a series of killing happened. The most notorious of the killings happened on September 29-20, 1941. On those days, 33,771 Jews were killed in a single operation. This was commanded by Kurt Eberhard, the police commander of the SS.
One of the largest single massacres during the Holocaust
The single mass killing of the almost 34 thousand Jews was only surpassed by the 1941 Odessa massacre of over 50 thousand Jews, and the Aktion Erntefest massacre of 42-43 thousand people. All of these massacres happening during the time of the Holocaust. Other victims of Babi Yar were Soviet prisoners of war, communists, and Roma. It is estimated that 100,000 to 150,000 people were killed at Babi Yar.
