Physical Education and Picture Books
Did you know that our libraries have books that connect to physical education? Basketball is popular in this town. Here are two books that might interest you- staff and students!
Salt in His Shoes!
Barnes and Noble provided overview:
Michael Jordan’s mother and sister team up for this heartwarming and inspirational picture book about faith and hope and how any family working together can help a child make his or her dreams come true.
Michael Jordan.
The mere mention of the name conjures up visions of basketball played at its absolute best. But as a child, Michael almost gave up on his hoop dreams, all because he feared he’d never grow tall enough to play the game that would one day make him famous.
That’s when his mother and father stepped in and shared the invaluable lesson of what really goes into the making of a champion—patience, determination, and hard work.
Hoop genius : how a desperate teacher and a rowdy gym class invented basketball
Barnes and Noble provided overview:
Taking over a rowdy gym class right before winter vacation is not something James Naismith wants to do at all. The last two teachers of this class quit in frustration. The students—a bunch of energetic young men—are bored with all the regular games and activities. Naismith needs something new, exciting, and fast to keep the class happy—or someone's going to get hurt. Saving this class is going to take a genius. Discover the true story of how Naismith invented basketball in 1891 at a school in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Above the rim : how Elgin Baylor changed basketball by Jen Bryant ; illustrations by Frank Morrison.
"Though not as widely known as other basketball legends, hall-of-famer Elgin Baylor was one of the game's all-time greatest players--an innovative athlete, team player, and quiet force for change. A member of the early, scrappy NBA and one of the first professional African American players, Elgin (b. 1934) played in the late 1950s and early 1960s for the Minneapolis/Los Angeles Lakers, taking risks on and off the court. Known for his acrobatic style of moving and shooting, he inspired others to get creative with their game. But when traveling for away games, hotels and restaurants weren't as welcoming of Elgin as they were of his white teammates. Together, Elgin and his teammates boycotted places practicing segregation until the entire NBA followed suit. [This book] is a peek into the early days of the NBA, a poetic telling of the life of an under-known athlete, and a celebration of standing up for what is right"--Provided by publisher
First Grade- Selected Books and Making Coloring Pages Come Alive
First graders started checking out books and working on projects in the library. This class created their own designs on Alaska De'naia caribou antler club and caribou hide gloves.
ABC Puzzles
Our kindergarteners love to do puzzles. Many work on individual puzzles that have been in the KW Vina Library for eons. Large puzzles take team work - Mrs. Archuleta worked with these three crafty puzzle makers to create the ABC's.
Building Future Engineers
“Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.”
― Albert Einstein
Ms. Ashley Burd's class tries out KEVA planks for the first time and discovering that not only they can do it but how to handle it if their creation falls.
SIYEH LAUNCHES BARK!!
The following information was shared through school channels and below is Siyeh Communications description of the program. It is good information to share with any adult for whom is responsible for children.
Why Bark?
Raising kids in the digital age isn’t easy. With so many dangers lurking online, it’s important to take steps to protect your children. Parental controls can help you do just that. By monitoring your child’s online activity, you can be alerted to any red flags – such as bullying, depression, violence, eating disorders, or predators.
With Bark from Siyeh Communications, you can take action to keep your child safe. Parental controls can give you peace of mind and help you create a safer, healthier environment for your family and community.
