The Year Continues....
It is an exciting time of year. The students and staff have been working hard on their exhibition projects. They are very excited to share what they have learned with you on April 26th. Please see the information in this newsletter for more guidelines regarding our 3rd Exhibition Night.
During the past few months, I have been reminded about the importance of the partnership we need to have between school and home. The efforts of parents, teachers and students working in unison is what makes all the difference in student achievement across content areas and social development. We are proud to see the signs of progress and want to encourage parents and students to continue to work hard. We don’t have much time left together for the 18/19 school year. We must strive to make every day count. As we enter our last trimester, I want to thank both parents and teachers for their dedication and devotion to learning. It is impressive to see the gains and rewarding to see students grow.
I also want to thank all of you that support CPE financially by participating in our coupon book sales and other fundraisers. Please know that we are able to use the money from these events to provide the latest instructional tools to students and teachers. The PTO has been the driving force behind this effort and it has made a huge difference in our ability to provide high quality instruction for your children. With your continued help, we hope to make this year’s fundraising the best yet.
3rd Annual Student Exhibition Night is April 26th 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Here are some other recommendations to consider prior to attending the event:
· Carpooling or walking to the school is strongly encouraged.
· Visit at least 4 classroom/student exhibitions and get your passport stamped to receive a school spirit item!
· Encourage your students/children to exhibit appropriate behavior and good audience manners. Remember students have worked hard to present and prepare for this night.
· Plan your time according to the schedule of events…. You won’t be able to see everything, but try to visit a variety of classrooms/areas. It is going to be a busy night!
· Conferences & Report Cards — Report cards will be distributed at conference times. Please be on the lookout for information coming home regarding scheduling a conference with teachers.
· Store bought treats/snacks— For student safety & health, all edible items provided for class events must be purchased from a store.
· Volunteer Forms— Background checks and volunteer applications must be filled out for volunteer work and chaperoning field trips. Paperwork must be turned in at least 1 week prior to a field trip.
· Appointments— We need your help. Please try to arrange appointments for your chilren outside the school day. We realize this is not always possible, but your support in maximizing every instructional minute is much appreciated.
Reading Homework Tips for Parents
· Have your child read aloud to you every night.
· Choose a quiet place, free from distractions, for your child to do his nightly reading assignments.
· As your child reads, point out spelling and sound patterns such as cat, pat, hat.
· When your child reads aloud to you and makes a mistake, point out the words she has missed and help her to read the word correctly.
· After your child has stopped to correct a word he has read, have him go back and reread the entire sentence from the beginning to make sure he understands what the sentence is saying.
· Ask your child to tell you in her own words what happened in a story.
· To check your child's understanding of what he is reading, occasionally pause and ask your child questions about the characters and events in the story.
· Ask your child why she thinks a character acted in a certain way and ask your child to support her answer with information from the story.
· Before getting to the end of a story, ask your child what he thinks will happen next and why.
Dress Code at C.P.E.
As spring approaches, it is important to remind ourselves of how to dress safe, respectful and responsible at school. The school dress code is in the student handbook, posted on-line and available in the front office for review. Teachers will be reviewing the highlights of the dress code with students in class. All of this is done with parents as partners. We strive to minimize the amount of distractions, maintain safety and a high degree of respect by following the dress code. Here are some general guidelines to review with your child:
· Backless tops, mesh tops, sagging pants, spaghetti strap tops & halter tops, are not permitted.
· Clothing should not have inappropriate logos, sayings, advertisements etc.
· We ask that students do not wear make-up.
· Flip flop shoes without a heel strap are not allowed.
· Longer shorts are preferred (minimum 3 inches from the knee is a general guide).
· Undergarments should be covered at all times.
Attendance at CPE
We recently reviewed our attendance rate at CPE. Our school average is about 95% attendance each year. That equates to students missing about 1 day per month of school. As all of you know, regular attendance (and being on time...school starts at 7:45 for K and 7:55 a.m. for grades 1-5) is paramount in making academic and social growth. We have sent home letters if your student has fallen below the 95% average. We recognize that Winter months are often characterized with illnesses, holidays and other family circumstances and we work hard to understand the individual dynamics of each student situation. By no means, do we want ill students to attend school just to maintain their attendance rate. If they are legitimately ill, they should stay home. However, it is important that parents are aware of their student’s attendance rate compared to the average and we all strive to be here as much as possible. As better weather and more daylight approach, we hope to see our school maintain our 95% average (or better). Thank you for making every effort to schedule appointments outside of the school day and send your student to school each day.

The CPE parking lot between 7:30 and 7:55
resembles LAX international airport during a holiday weekend. Here are some things you can do to help the situation:
· Pull as far forward in the circle as possible before unloading.
· Say your “goodbyes” and “I love you’s” before unloading.
· Have students exit from the right hand side of the car.
· Avoid passing other vehicles.
· Remind students to walk into the building
To help with the traffic congestion this year, grades 1-5 may be dropped off and enter through the playground gate on Bush St. Parents may not enter through this gate. If parents wish to enter the school building, please go through the front entrance and sign in. Thank you for helping keep our kids safe.

PTO at CPE...Welcome or welcome back from your CPE PTO! We have a great group of parents returning that truly love getting together to help organize and facilitate the many wonderful and worthwhile events throughout the year. What we are really excited about is the chance to get to know you, the person who has wanted to get involved, but just hasn’t had the time or ability. Make this the year you take a chance and get involved, you’ll love it!! We meet on the first Thursday of every Month (except Sept) in the School Library from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Our upcoming meetings are set for April 4th and May 2nd at 6:00 p.m. in the school library. We look forward to seeing you there.
Miscellaneous notices and information....
Free Breakfast & Lunch
Each and every day CPE offers a free breakfast & lunch for all students. We start serving students at 7:30 a.m.
Students must turn off and store their cell phones upon arrival at school. If you or your child need to communicate during the school day, please call the front office. This will help to avoid miscommunication.
The CPE parent handbook is available on the school website for your review. We strongly recommend reviewing the rules/policies of CPE. We have printed versions available upon request in the school office. Our district website address is:
When Students are ill or absent:
When your student(s) is ill and will not be attending school that day, please call our office. (494-6500). We appreciate all the parents that have made an extra effort to keep us informed this year. Thank you!
Notification to Parents and District Patrons
Central Point School District 6 provides accommodations and special programs for qualified students with a disability. These activities are provided through Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Your child, or a child of your acquaintance, may be eligible for accommodations or special programming. The District maintains assessment resources to determine eligibility for these resources. If you are aware of a child with a potential disability, including children that may require speech or language services, please notify your school Principal or Felicia Holt, Coordinator of Special Education at 494-6231.
