Mike Sloan

“The History of the Miguel Menchaca Homestead Complex”

A historic stone villa at the foot of a hill in the city limits of Grey Forest off Scenic Loop Road stands testament to the fascinating life of Tejano pioneer Miguel Menchaca. Built in 1858, the House of Stones was awarded Texas Historic Landmark designation in 1965. A private residence not open to the public, the stone villa provides an intriguing backdrop for the story of its original owner.

Mike Sloan, with his wife Susan, purchased the historic residence in 2012. He will give a presentation on the homestead complex and his research on its long and storied history.

Mike Sloan is a clean energy “pioneer” working to kickstart and grow Texas’ wind and solar power industries for the past 35 years. An advocate for foster kids, aspiring blacksmith, a lousy fisherman, and still a pioneer, now living in the 1850s Menchaca Homestead, Mike is currently studying world history at UTSA.

Members - $12; Non-Members - $16.

Field Trip to Rancho Diana

The HSH is sponsoring a Fall Field Trip to Rancho Diana on Friday, October 22 from 10:30 to 2:30 pm. This members-only event will be a guided tour of the park. Those attending can take a bag lunch and beverage to eat on the grounds. We will carpool from Old Town, meeting there at 10:00 am. This guided tour is limited to 20 people.

HSH members who attended the September General Meeting were given the opportunity to sign-up, but we still have a few openings available. Email: info@historicalsocietyofhelotes.org if you'd like to attend.

Spring 2022 Field Trip

The Society is sponsoring a members-only Spring Field Trip on Friday, March 25, 2022, to the Gault Archaeological Site, just north of Austin. The Gault Site is a protected 40-acre archaeological site with abundant evidence of past human occupation. Between 1999 and 2002 more than 1.4 million artifacts were recovered—about half of them of Clovis age. A unique Clovis feature, a stone floor, was discovered as well as more than one hundred engraved stones, amongst the earliest art in the Americas.

According to the director of the site, this is a walking tour that is 1-1/2 miles roundtrip—easy walking, but a fairly long distance. There is one golf cart that can take four, including the driver, wherever the rest of the tour is going. Please let us know if you have need of the cart.

Depending on how many members are interested in going on this guided tour, the Society may charter a bus as it’s a four-hour roundtrip. Our plan is to leave from Helotes Old Town at 7:00 am, tour the site from 10:30 to 1:30, and leave the Gault Site at 2:00 pm.

To rent a bus for the trip for up to 40 people, the cost will be $60 per person, which would include entry to the site. You may bring a bagged lunch and beverage to eat on the drive back. The Society will provide water bottles.

Please let us know NOW if you are interested in attending this tour. Reservations and payment will be taken starting in January.
