Mrs. Flynn's Class
Updates, Reminders, and Fun Things to Try!
Class News
MAP We just finished taking the winter MAP test - everyone made at least one of their goals. We will have a classroom reward of board games and fun!. We will use the MAP data to place the students into an MTSS/Intervention group from their lowest RIT strand. Those groups will start the first full week we are back from Christmas break. Reports will go home with grades on January 3rd.
MATH We are wrapping up Unit 4 of math and will be taking the test Friday of this week. I will include the link to the unit review packet, as always it is extra credit - if you do not have access to a printer and your child will complete it, let me know and I will send a copy home with them.
Communications: This week we are on Unit 3 Week 4 - Symphony of whales. Dec. 17-19 (before break) and the three days after break we will be on Unit 3 Week 5 - the spelling test for that week will be Friday the 4th.
AR: Please keep encouraging your child to read at home. Only a few students have met their AR goal this quarter. There are only 7 more days to make it.
Holiday Party - Our Holiday party will be on Tuesday, Dec 18th at 2:30. Please remember your stocking stuffer - one for each student - we have 21 students in the class. I provide a stocking for each student and the student brings a little something for each classmate. Something small like a candy cane, a piece of candy, pencil, eraser, or a small toy for example.
Something every day for:
Holiday Hoopla Around the World - click this link to bring up the flyer to get clues on the mystery country and how we are celebrating it.
Our last day is Grinch Day - Sunflower is looking for parent volunteers to run Grinch stations - everything will be provided we just need volunteers to run the stations. If you are able - please volunteer! Third grade is from 8:15-9:30. So far we only have 1 volunteer - need 15 more. Here is the link to the sign up:

Misc. Recorder order forms are due this Friday - Skating permission slips will go out Monday and need to be turned back in before the break.
All School Spelling Bee: Sunflower's all-school spelling bee is Wednesday, January 19th at 2:00 pm. One student from each class will participate in the bee. I will have a class bee the week of January 7th to see who will represent our class. I will attach the study guide - it begins with first grade - our class bee will start with the third-grade words. During the all-school bee all/any of the words could be used. There will also be rounds of spelling and rounds of vocabulary - make sure to practice both. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Parent Communication
I feel communication between us is very important. I will send out emails, notices through Bloomz (more info below) and student work through seesaw. The two main apps I would like you to download if possible are Bloomz and seesaw. Bloomz will allow messaging for reminders, volunteer sign-ups (this is where our holiday party sign-ups are), class wishlist signups, student behavior monitoring, and eventually parent-teacher conference scheduling.
The other app is seesaw. This is a student portfolio app. This is not something that is required, but you will have access to see your student's work and some of the things they do,
AR (Accelerated Reader)
AR - Students read at home -suggested 20 minutes a night. They are given a point goal for the quarter. Picture books are worth .5, or half a point. Chapter books can range in point value depending on their content. In order for students to make their goal, they need to have reached their point goal along with keeping an overall 80% comprehension. Please encourage your child to take the AR quizzes. Students can only take quizzes at school. Parents can login to homeconnect (link below in the techie tools) with their student's login information and check their progress. You can also set it up to receive an email with your student's scores when they take a quiz.
Planner
Students will bring home their planner every night. They should have it filled out with they day's information, and parents should sign it nightly. Also, any extra work students do such as, get online on one of our classroom sites, study flashcards, study spelling words, or study math facts - write that in the planner and students will earn extra dojo points. Also, you can write transportation notes or questions in the planner.
School Store
School store is normally on the first Friday of the month. Students may bring money to purchase panther related items at lunch.
