What's the BUZZ!
August 2020
Hear from the Administrators...
We are off to a new school year unlike any other we have been a part of in Lee County. We thank you for your patience and understanding as we continue to navigate this unprecedented time in our lives.
Our theme this year is...Now S.T.R.E.A.M.-ing @ SMS!
Our campus will focus on how Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics are used to shape our society and World. We will have virtual tours and other exciting materials to share with our students and families.
As you know, all of our students began learning online on August 17th. Hopefully, we will be able to begin campus learning in a few weeks once it has been deemed safe to do so.
This year will begin providing a monthly newsletter to parents in hopes to become more consistent with communication from our campus. We will still utilize phone, email, and text messages to communicate with all our stakeholders.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any concerns or questions. Let's have a great year and...Fly, Hornets, Fly!

SMS Athletic Information
Parents, I've created the following "2020 SMS Athletic Information" presentation to assist with you with creating your DragonFly Max account, and hopefully answer any questions you might be having.
SMS Athletic teams are for 7th and 8th graders ONLY, therefore if your child is a 5th or 6th grader, you do NOT need to set this up until their 7th grade year (if they plan on trying out and participating in athletics).
In order to try-out or participate in ANY sport, students MUST: - have an up-to-date physical signed by an M.D. or D.O. The physical MUST be done on the AHSAA approved form. This form can be found linked in the presentation or on the SMS Facebook page. They were also emailed out back in June and last week.
- have a concussion form and consent to participate form signed and dated by the student and parent. The preferred method of doing this is signing from your DragonFly Max account electronically. Once you digitally sign and submit, it will upload it to your account for you. If you fill out the paper form, which is linked in the presentation (and emailed), then you will have to take a picture, then upload it from your phone or computer to your DragonFly Max Account
-Create a DragonFly Max account. Most of this presentation I'm posting is dedicated to DragonFly Max. There are uploaded videos walking you through the set-up process on your computer step by step, as well as directions on setting in up through the app. Please note, when signing up for your account, you are signing up as the parent. After the initial set-up, you will have the opportunity to add your child. Many students are going in behind their parents and creating an account in their names, which is duplicating the account. Please don't do this.
If the above listed criteria has not been met, then please don't drop your child off for a try-out as they will not be permitted to participate.
For any tryout, workout, practice, etc., students MUST bring a mask (face covering), their own water bottle, and will not be permitted to share equipment (sleeves, head bands, wrist bands, gloves, pads, etc.). Students should wear appropriate footwear (cleats, athletic shoes) and appropriate clothing (t-shirts and shorts). If the student or anyone in the household is having symptoms or running a fever, please keep the student at home.
After viewing this presentation, please email me (harry.josh@lee.k12.al.us) and I will be happy to assist you or answer any questions you may still have.
