Faith in Action Visioning
Last Saturday, October 3rd, more than 20 interested folks gathered to discuss our Faith in Action ministry at OUUC and envision the work we are called to do here and in the larger world. Everyone brought a rich background of experience and passion and shared their individual visions to create a collage of our collective vision. You can see that vision board here.

From Rev. Mary
“The times are urgent; let us slow down." ~ Bayo Akomolafe
Last Sunday I spoke about the need to center ourselves in order to listen deeply to each other and to what the world needs most. Yes, times are urgent. And, yes, despite all that is telling us to go faster, we must slow down in order to hear the voice within, the voices of those who are silenced, and the voice that does not use words.
Here are some of my words from Sunday as we explored the spiritual theme of deep listening:
Loudest doesn’t mean wisest or clearest or most life-giving. It just means loudest and may drown out the voice that doesn’t use words. This month I invite you to listen selectively and listen deeply. It matters who and what we listen to. Read more....

News from the Blue Apron Team
As our OUUC blue aprons say: “OUUC Feeds People”. Each month there are three ways to help do that for the children and adults who are experiencing homelessness in our community…
Sunday, October 11: OUUC volunteers will be needed to provide the second Sunday dinner for the adults of Hope Village. Needed will be one main dish, one vegetable dish, one salad, and one dessert, each to serve ten, and delivered by 5:45 pm to Hope Village located on the Boulevard side of Westminster Presbyterian Church.
Wednesdays, October 21, and October 28, OUUC volunteers will be needed to provide main and side dishes for the adult guests at the Interfaith Shelter, and/or donate self-stable foods for children and families at the Lacey Family Center. These donations are delivered between 5:15 and 5:45 to the parking lot of the Olympia Copy Center, across from the street from the Shelter on Franklin Street. To join the team and donate, please contact Jo Ann Young.
Quick Notes
Trunk and Treat! October 31, 3 - 4:30 pm. Decorate your car and wear a costume to hand out candy to our trick and treaters. RSVP to Sara Lewis.
October’s Theme is Deep Listening. There are several ways to engage with the theme: Join a Covenant Circle to discuss the theme with others. Receive the theme packet from Soul Matters by joining the Soul Matters group on OUUC Connect. Explore the theme on the padlet.
Join the 2nd Thursday Covenant Circle now! It will meet from 5:30 - 7:00 pm, facilitated by Melissa Denton. Register now.
Happy Indigenous People’s Day, October 12 - One way to honor the day this year while social distancing would be to read a book by an indigenous author.
Since 2004, Share the Plate has been one way our congregation supports local non-profits doing important work for our community. Does your favorite local non-profit know about this application? Please spread the word that applications are due October 15. Grant amounts vary and ranged from $2000-$3500 pre-COVID.
Our Sunday worship service will be live on our OUUC YouTube channel as well as on Zoom. You can still participate in Sunday worship through Zoom. Those who would like to try the YouTube option can do so here.

In the Larger Community
There is still time to donate to the Pacific Northwest District's Fall 2020-21 Chalice Lighter call! This is your Fall Call for the 2020-2021 church year. It will help support PNWD congregations who are struggling to stay afloat in the wake of the coronavirus tidal wave. On top of restrictions on meeting for worship and the challenges of pastoral care, many congregations are struggling to meet staff payrolls and mortgage payments. We PNWD Chalice Lighters can help alleviate this need. We want to ensure that our congregations retain key staff and emerge from “Stay Home, Stay Safe” restrictions able to continue the faith and justice work so sorely needed in our communities. Make a one-time gift of $20, $50, or $100 online at the PNWD giving page.
